Question

How to get resonable quality audio and video into Connect Pro using Firewire

I have been trying to input audio and video into conect pro without any success. I have been using the Canopus ADVC 110 and a Sony DSR11, both connecting via firewire, Connect Pro however does not reconise them in the camera pod. Is this a problem others have experienced? I understand there is also quality issues with Connect Pro, we are using verson 7. Any suggestions most welcome.

Thanks Doug

    Hi,

I thought I would reply again, this time because I think I may be able to offer some sort of advice.

I was having problems at first trying to get audio from my M-Audio firewire mixer. I realized though that Adobe Connect was getting confused since I was sending audio in via firewire, yet getting audio out from the headphone jack on my laptop. It worked once I set up the firewire mixer as the audio input and the audio output, and plugging my headphones into the audio out port of the firewire mixer.

What type of camera are you using with the Canopus box, if you don't mind me asking?

The problem is that no where in Connect Pro is there a place to select the firewire device as the audio or video input.

In answer to your question re inputs, i am feeding the output of a video mixer in to the ADVC110. We stream live events in both a studio and in a large capacity lecture room. The idea is for students to log in remotely and view/participate in the lectures via connect pro.

    Hi Doug,

Well my friend, as I said, I have an M-Audio firewire powered mixer; I tend to think of it as the audio equivalent of the Canopus ADVC-110. I also have an ADVC-110 right here at my desk. However, the two work very differently despite being so similar in function. The M-Audio mixer has downloadable software from their site, you can install a virtual mixer and play with the incoming audio signals, it's slick. My Mac recognizes each channel of the mixer (3 of them) as both a possible input and output audio source, and Adobe Connect does the same.

But with the ADVC-110, there is nothing. I can not make it appear in system preferences as a possible input or output source, even though I am sending the exact same audio source through it that I was the M-Audio mixer. Adobe Connect also does not recognize it as either a possible input or an output.

I have had this exact same problem with my ADVC-110 in the past. And there is just no support out there. I can not find any type of Canopus download or plug-in on the web that has made it play nicely with any of my Macs. If there's a Canopus support site, I haven't found it. And there is no ADVC-110 software included in the box with the Canopus. My ADVC-110's incoming video is viewable to me only through iChat's "video preview", and Quicktime's "Record Movie" functions. For some reason I can not figure out, the video image is reversed, a mirror image, in iChat. Yet without changing a single setting it appears correctly in Quicktime.

I always figured- this Canopus box sure is quirky! In any event, I do not think it's Adobe Connect causing you this problem, since I can not make the Canopus box work for me either, I just tried it now. However, as I said, the M-Audio device works just fine using the exact same firewire connection and the exact same audio source.

    Hi,

I hope you don't mind me jumping into this thread, I am having a problem so similar I thought it may be useful to ask it here. The recorded presentations that are being created by my department are all experiencing ugly (but brief) drops in both audio and video when they are played back. The video isn't as big of an issue, but the audio dropouts are making our recorded presentations un-viewable.Testing has shown that the drops are occurring during the recording, not the playback.

I am also using a Firewire audio device, an "M-Audio Solo". I was hoping that providing digital, balanced audio via firewire would produce better results, but the audio dropouts are still happening.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Doug, I use a Canopus ADVC110 pretty regularly with Acrobat Connect so I know that it does work. Important: are you on Windows or MacOS? In the Mac version, I've experienced regular crashing when trying to use a Firewire video source, which I have not bothered to troubleshoot since it works fine on the Windows version.

If you are on Windows (XP) - when you plug in the Canopus, does the little "camera detected" dialog box pop up? Can you confirm that the camera is being recognized in another application?

One "gotcha" on the Canopus is making sure it's set to "analog in" instead of "digital in" on the box itself, which you've probably checked, but I thought I'd mention it.

Once you get it to show up at all, you can get decent quality by turning up the quality options in the camera pod, and the Windows version also has some better audio quality options (as compared to Mac). There's also a cool add-in called "Master Video Control" that enables much higher quality video, although it costs money and I have had stability issues when trying to use it: http://ed-apps.com/

    Hello bfineman

thanks for your reply. I use an xp machine. I run CS4, including On-location and Premiere. I also stream with Adobe Fash Media Live Encoder.  They all pick up audio and video through the canopus AVDC110. For some reason however, when i run Connect Pro, it does not recognise the ADVC110 as a video / camera or audio input. In fact, any sort of firewire device is not recognised by Connect Pro. If i go to control pannel and click on scanners and cameras, i can see the image that is input into the AVDC110 on the computer screen, but Connect Pro does not. I have installed Flash 10, still no joy. We are running NOD32 Antivirus software, but other than that, nothing is strange on the edit machine, or any of the other pc's i have tried it on.

Any more insights??? This one has me beaten.

    Kind Regards

    Doug

I'm assuming you're running with the Acrobat Connect add-in? I'm on version 9.3.110 of the add-in software. What version are you on?

To select the video input I'm assuming you are going to Meeting->Manage My Settings->Select Camera.

Mine shows up as "Microsoft DV Camera and VCR". I'm doing it successfully right now using an ADVC300 (a 110 is not available at the moment, but they should function similarly).

Have you tried setting the TV out option to "yes" or "enabled" on your firewire device?
