Users and Groups

I am trying to sort out my users and groups and wanted to know if anyone had any ideas on a best practice?

Ideally I would use folders and subfolders but Breeze doesn't allow this. I wanted to avoid having a huge list of users and groups that is difficult to manage.

We have about seventy five users on our system now and will have a few hunderd by the end of December, 2006. At first I didn't like the Breeze Manager interface for users and groups but as I've worked with it I haven't found it to be too problematic. I mostly use the serch function now and it is faster than scrolling.

We have created different groups for all users and then put the groups in courses and curriculums or granted priviledges to the groups. For example for my instructors who will be meeting hosts, I created a group called instructor-hosts and put that group into the default group for hosting meetings. For my Instructional Designers, I created a group and then gave them most all of the built in privilegs accept administration. For students, I create a group based on their registration number then put the individuals in the registration number. Then I enroll the group in course or curriculum, meeting or event. This way if a student drops, I just take them out of the group and the lose all their priveleges and access to the materials. If one adds the course, I just put them in the group and they have all the privileges they need. I also add the instructor to this group too, in case some of the content comes from another area that they don't have access by default.

When we ramp up our user base, we will automate this process by reading a csv file and adding and changing users.
