Anti alias question, looks worse with it on?

Hi, i was reading about anti - aliasing and it looks it is for smoothing out jagged edges. I thought it would improve quality, but when I turn it on (4, 16 or 64) The edges turn horrible. Why is this? Am I using it wrong? Thanks
