Question

Changing height behavior

Hey all, I'm a bit new to substance painter and I'm trying to make a mold. I've been using alphas to create height maps on a curved surface, but I want the height to only extrude in the +Y direction and not normally from the surfaces. This way I can avoid getting any undercuts for my mold. Is there a setting or a way I can change the behavior so that my height maps only go in the +Y direction? Thank you!

Hi @AlanYeh,

Thanks for the question.

You could switch the brush alignment for Camera under the brush settings.

This way, the painted alphas will be aligned to your view.

The Projection tool would also give you a similar result.

Best regards,

Hi @Cyril Dellenbach,

Thanks for the reply. It was super helpful! However, do you know if there are ways I could get similar results while using a fill layer? What I've been doing is inserting alpha's using fill layers, tiling them, and then deforming on the X-Z plane using the Warp Projection - Edit Vertices Tool. I'm making deforming patterns and would like to keep that function of the Edit Vertices tool.

This is an example of what I'm trying to do. I know warp projection is normally for wrapping around a surface, but I find the handles in Edit Vertices very helpful for my project.

Help always appreciated!

Alan

I am not entirely sure to get what are the features you're trying to cross, but the Edit Vertices Tool only comes with the Warp projection.

If you want to use a Fill Layer with the features previously talked (Camera alignment, Projection Tool), you can perfectly create a Fill Layer, add a mask and use these features within the mask.

With that being said, there is plenty other Fill projections that will probably suit for your project, give a try to the Planar projection.

Best regards,
