How to make roll stitches brush to work with your own sbsr properly?

When I am trying to replace  the stitch material  with my own the brush is no more "rolling". Rather  puts brush dabs on each other or doigng some other mess I couldn't even figure out  .   What  am I missing?    Is there a special something to make it roll?
