Hello Substance Community,

I looking for some information on how to make my normal map affect my low geo into making look more smoothly like how it looks like on Zbrush. I have uploaded a jpeg with image showing the before and after how and how the normal map does pretty much nothing it basically looks the same with or without it. Only difference is that its picking up some of the zbrush damage I created but its doing nothing to affect the smoothness and thats what I really want. Has far has a i know thats the whole purpose of a normal map. The normal map is exported from "Zbrush Multimap exporter" and its a 8k Udim just to experiement. I hope to hear from your soon guys and have goodnight/ day.

The normal map is used to add simulated detail to a low poly model, not to smooth out detail. Hence it is used to bake detail from a high poly model into the normal map of a low poly model, or to add textural detail to the surface where it does not exist.
Note the key word 'simulated'. It is used to simulate detail during rendering but does not do anything to the actual surface or the number of edges in the model itself.

Hello @MrSazo,

Thanks for the question.

A Normal map won't result with a different topology, so the edges from your low poly will always be visible, no matter the Normal map.

Therefore, in situations like yours, it's better to have even less polygons/details in your low poly model, so the Normal map will do the job, and keep everything smooth.

Best regards,
