Paint at 4k, then export to 8k technical details

Hello

As per title we are looking for information on the technical details on what happens if we create the textures at for example 4k and then export to 8k. Like what happens to imported textures, manually painted masks, brush strokes, baked textures, noises and so on when exporting at a higher resolution than what was used in SP, how does the upscaling, if this is even the correct term, work?

Thanks in advance for any inputs.

Hello @Cyrill258943538jp7,

Great question.

It depends on the ressource. Basically, some of these resources are static and other are procedural.

As instance, imported bitmaps and baked maps are static. Therefore, if you export in 8K with 4K resources it will be a simple linear upscaling (which means that your work will be in 4K, but resized to fit the 8K texture map).

However, with noise maps, Substance Materials, Smart materials, filters, etc. those are procedural and will adapt to the resolution of export. For brush strokes (painted masks are made of brush strokes) this is a similar process. All the strokes are saved in the project, and reprojected with the proper resolution when exporting your textures.

I hope this is a bit clearer.
