Question

Slow Layer Visibility Toggle in Substance 3D Painter

When I toggle the visibility of layers in Substance 3D Painter, it takes about 2–3 minutes to load.
I’ve tried deleting unused resources, updating my graphics drivers, and increasing the local cache size to 1500MB, but none of these have resolved the issue so far.
After toggling the visibility a few times, the loading time seems to improve, but the problem occurs again every time I reopen the project.
I’d appreciate it if you could suggest a solution.

My computer specifications:
Substance 3D Painter version: 11.0.0
CPU: Intel Core i7-12700F
GPU: RTX 3070

Hi @Omochisan,

Thank you for the question.

This is due to how Painter is handling the layer stack. Layers at the bottom of the stack will take much longer to load than top layers.

"After toggling the visibility a few times, the loading time seems to improve, but the problem occurs again every time I reopen the project."

Painter saves cache information, so when toggling layers, the layer will be saved for quicker loading. However, the cache data will obviously be lost after closing the project.

In addition, if you have a very Low Poly model and you're using the Paint tool with the lowest Spacing value, it will greatly increase the number of stamps per polygon and Painter will take more time to process the layer.

I advise you to keep a decent Spacing value when using the Paint brush, but the most efficient solution for enhanced performances is always to reduce the Texture set resolution. Especially considering you can export with a different resolution value, so you can work with a 2K resolution (as instance) and export in 4K.

That being said, we're currently looking for solutions for better performances.

Best regards,
