Can I LINK to different objects in another workspace, like with InDesign?

I want to create a cup of a bunch of pens, all the same kind. I have created a single pen and saved as a DN file.  When I create a new file with the cup, I drag my pen.dn file into the new workspace and duplicate it a number of times.  When I go back to my original pen.dn file to change the pen colors, the pens I placed on the cup.dn file do not update.  Obviously if this is possible, I am doing it incorrectly.

Is there a way to link to an object I have created previously that would update each time I make edits to the original file like how it works with InDesign?
