Importing images into images panel

Is it possible to import an image from my hard drive into the 'Images' panel on the left?

Or can I only import it by applying it straight to an object?

the ui is not designed to add assets to without hacking them in

also Dimension images should be Jpg or Png with Jpg being what it wants... if you use a bmp expect corrupt saves
