Managing filesize in Dimension

Hi all. I'm using Dimension for the first time and I'm having problems managing the size of the file to the point the program won't function and I literally have to wait 1 min to see the mouse move! Ok it is a merchandising project so there are a number of product facings and then the shelf is full about 5 of each product in depth so I appreciate there might be a lot of data. I've maxed out the RAM on my Mac but to no avail. Can anyone help??

Export the whole thing into .obj files. Then create a new dimension file that is blank and import your obj files. Most likely the new file will be a lot smaler even with aln your models loaded into it again. After a while if the file gets huge again just repeat.

Fantastic solution to reduce file size. It works like magic, though all the groups get ungrouped.  Thank you

Yeah i know super annoying, but if not too much work export each group into a seperat .obj to reimport. Then its easier to organize things again.

it have a ryzen computer and a good graphics card, but after a while my computer cant handle the files for rendering either because the file size keeps growing for no reason.

i have one file that is 3,6Gb that I just exported into an obj. made a new dimension file and imported the obj and the new file, containing exactly the same objects is only 48Mb

You can render 3 Ps files from DImension and combain them in Ps. Each rendered Ps file can include a part of your whole scene. That can be also a solution.

its not really a long term solition thst the program generates blosted files for no reason making it imposdible to work...  i had a few project files that was over 3gb in size. After exporting them to .obj files snd then importing them into fresh blank project files  they are all down to less than 300mb each. The files grows huge for some reason. The 3gb files stays that size even if all the content in them is deleted.

you have an I5 Mac with 24G ram and the scene has 2{24} + 12 + the stand and lights... you are asking too much from your system

your 2 best options now;

  • share the Dn file and I'll rendor it on my Ryzen... this is only a short term but it solves the immediate problem
  • get a bigger computer [at least an i7 but Ryzen is best] with between 32G - 2T ram to do rendors with. A good Windows Ryzen workstation will set you back about $900... a AMD server chip is about $2000 + another $2000 for the other parts

Thanks for your solution. Just the $4900 investment required then!

How many objects do you have in the scene? Might it be a factor of geometry

Yeah, there are a number of objects because it is a merchandising project – see below.

Thanks.

The number isn't significantly difficult.  It is possible that the amount of geometry in each object is higher than necessary.  It looks as though there aren't any difficult lighting options in this image either (which should help the scene's rendering solution).  Check the size of your materials as well.  Depending on your image resolution, it's possible that you can use lower resolution materials on your 3D elements.

if the file is too big for your poor Mac you can share it and I'll do the rendor on my Ryzen for you

Yes Dimension lets you make a file that your system can't open because it takes more Ram to open a file that it does to work on one... dropping the pixel count will help your Mac but the best workflow is to share the Dn file so we know what we are dealing with

Hi. I've managed to output a render by screenshotting the render preview.

The biggest issue is being able to work within the file when there is a lot of data in there – I literally had to wait for the mouse to move!
