Will Adobe Dimension be updated to Apple Silicon? What is the future of Adobe Dimension?

So I was wandering ‘round at the Adobe booth at the IBC here in Amsterdam, and spoke to a guy who was happily presenting Substance Painter. We spoke about the Modeler missing on Mac, the end of Aero, the lack of creating VR, the clumsiness of Stager, the fact that Substance’s crown jewels (the materials) are still going strong and catering to many other apps.

I told him, it seemed to me that Adobe is stil struggling with the quality, features and acceptance of these 3D offerings. And that people like me are getting more reluctant by the year in endorsing Adobe tools in this area…

But he replied that a new overhauled and beefed-up version of Stager is in private beta now (which has publicly been announced by Adobe), and that a spin-off might find its way back again into the Creative Cloud, as the new and improved version of Dimension (with an AI vengeance). Stuff like the retracted Substance 3D Viewer beta (and its AI features) were probably testing the new data systems (totally built on USD) and rendering engines, since it ran natively on Apple Silicon with GPU rendering. 

So there seems to be some life in that corner of the Adobe universe…

In the meantime, users are having fun with the web-based Project Neo, a grass-roots playground for creative use of 3D, which is still in Beta, for Adobe to cancel whenever they feel like it.

Unfortunately nothing new on runway. 

Dimension is leaving the Adobe stage quietly behind the curtains, most likely. Just like Aero, Animate/Flash, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, Mixamo, Brackets, Director, Muse, Air, and others…

It might be a good idea to export one’s scenes for import into Blender or other 3D software. Many more lighting, material, export, and animation options open up as well - obviously at the expense of simplicity of operation, unfortunately.

History taught us one thing: when Adobe falls silent, run for the hills.
