Question

migrating DW CS4 to a different pc

Hi, I have puchased long ago a copy of DW CS4 which I still seldom use, and is ok for what I need. Now I have bought a new pc and I have troubles in migrating the software.

I insert the cd, go through the installation process, insert the serial number, but then I get a message that this is an update for GoLive CS2 or 9 and that I have to write the serial number. Instead, when I bought it, I used to upgrade from GoLive 5.0. I still have GL 5.0 but its serial number isn't recognized.

What shall I do?

I tried contacting support via chat, but they suggested me to ask on the forum since they have no information for an old software like this.

Thank you for any help

Elena

Thank you both for your answers. I used DW2017 for a while but, since I make maybe one website a year or less, it is not worth paying for a montly subscribtion. For the moment I'd just like to keep my old CS4 for ordinary maintainance.

I just got a private message from Adobe Team to help me through the activation issue via skype, which is nice of them. I hope that that will work. Otherwise I'll be back to you!

Thanks again

E.

If that was a private message from this forum, do you still have their username?

Chances are very high you were, or are, being scammed.

Adobe reps here don't use Skype.

:O

I got three messages actually, with same text. Usernames: Bob Anderson, Andrea Speaks, Eric Peterson

It doesn't seem a scam as I came back on forums.adobe.com to answer. Isn't this normal practice? I'm confused...

If I'm understanding correctly, you need the qualifying product's serial number to get your CS4 upgrade to activate.  Log in to your Adobe Account below.  If you registered your software online, Adobe should have a record of your product serial numbers.

Adobe Account

Incidentally, Online Chat has to help you with installation & product activation issues, even if it's legacy software.  Next time, don't ask for anything except activation assistance and if necessary ask to speak to a supervisor.

Elena,

My guess is that the servers which were once operational to finalize permanent license software registrations/installations have long been shut down, meaning there is no way to validate either of your known serial numbers to activate the installation. Both CS4 and GoLive are extremely old. In fact, I'd be surprised if current operating systems would even allow either to run. To get an active version of Dreamweaver on your new computer you may likely have only the option of a Creative Cloud subscription.

From what little you wrote, I suspect a CC subscription would be overkill for your purposes and skill level. If I am wrong and you are an adept hand coder, there are other options you can explore as you don't really need something like Dreamweaver--which in its current incarnation is light years different from the CS4 you know and be a steep learning curve for you.

If you are not a good hand coder, you may want to migrate to one of the free web building platforms like Wix or Squarespace.

Hi Chris, I'm going back to your kind message here above. I haven't been able to find a solution, and I'm still using DW on my old pc, which is not convenient at all

I'd like to know more about the options you mentioned. I like to code but it is more a passion than a job. I mantain several websites I made, and every now and then I happen to build a new one. I'm not interested at all in platforms like Wix or Squarespace, I look for something with some html5/css2 assistance, some javascript, bootstrap, maybe a split view (no wysiwyg needed), ftp, ... Something similar to what dreamweaver used to be would be perfect... and possibly free (or inexpensive)!

I remember I tried Aptana long ago (maybe 2011) but for some reason I didn't like it... maybe now things have changed?

I'd love to hear your suggestions. Thank you
Elena

Brackets is an open source code editor.  In fact, it's the same code engine used in the current Dreamweaver CC.

Brackets - A modern, open source code editor that understands web design.

Dreamweaver CC has a free 7 day trial,  Try it before you decide.  I still think DW has the best site management tools of any code editor I've tried.
