continuous download of Flash Player

This has been going on for quite sometime and I've just never found any solution. On sites with Flash it asks me to download the player. I have the player already, but I download it anyway. The box on the Flash site shows that yes, I do have Flash installed now. Then I go back to the site that uses Flash and I'm back to the start - please download Flash Player.

I can't understand why if it's on my computer, why the site keeps asking me to download it again, yet it shows I do have it on my computer.

I started to use Macromedia Flash 8 Training from the Source, James English, and needed to play Flash in one of the tutorials. It sent me to the download site. I downloaded, shows the Flash movement in the sample box that if you have Flash you will see it in the box. I go back to the Flash site and once again - wants me to download Flash.

So it's just a continuous circle with no end.

Would anyone have ANY idea at all why something like this would happen? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I don't know what else to try.

That's exactly the same problem I've described. How do you get the plugin to work properly?

    OK
    SOLUTION
    This requires no reboot

    - Close all browsers and MSN Messenger and anything else using Flash
    - Install latest Flash ActiveX plugin if not already installed.
    - Delete everything in \WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\ except Flash9b.ocx.
    - Download and Install Flash v6 ActiveX here http://www.ahlrates.com/players/Install%20Flash%20Player%206%20AX.exe
    - Open Regedit and search for flash.ocx
    - For each instance it finds...
    typically C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash.ocx
    - Just change the filename to point to Flash9b.ocx
    e.g. C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9b.ocx

Thats it...latest version installed and working.....no reboot required
Old v6 installer appears to write the correct registry entries (pointing to old file of course)
    New installer breaks it again.

Go here to verify what version of Flash Player ActiveX you have: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about
MSN Messenger Winks also work after this.

Hmmm..........Page Does Not Exist it says:

You had a " at the end of the link so I tried it without it first, and then with it, as normally quotes are not part of a link. At any rate I get nothing with either attempt.

The link in your reply works fine for me when I click on your post. Flash Player TechNote Download SubInACL from Microsoft. Try doing a google search for "Flash Player TechNote Download SubInACL from Microsoft" and it is the first one that comes up.

Well, I'll definitely try that too! Thanks!

<<<I then installed flash player 7 with a link that I got from these posts,,,, got the same old install flash player 9 prompt. ....So if you've tried it all... what can it hurt...<<<<

Unfortunately, for me, been there, done that. So I have finally given up. I just have to accept that the old versions of Flash Player were fine, but the new version sucks!

I found a "FIX" posted on the forum "Flash Player 9 Update". I didn't have enough guts to download and run it from the "FIX" link (zip file from the donglefree URL) but read the Microsoft and Adobe technotes that were referenced on the "FIX" page and followed those instructions, specifically, followed Adobe's Flash Player TechNote "Download SubInACL from Microsoft to fix permission issues that prevent the Flash Player Installation, http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=fb1634cb" instructions to the letter and it took a long time to run but Flash 9 player installed and ran perfectly after that. So far, everything else is still working as well!

My situation was that I had uninstalled a demo version of Flash Pro 8 and installed a licensed copy. After that, it no longer detected that I had a Flash Player and I was prompted to download a player so I did, (Flash Player 9 by default). After that I was hosed, I could uninstall but I could not register a new player, any version, and get it detected. Using a different browser, different user accounts, and a different Flash Player version was not an option for me so I did everything Adobe said to do (including 200 reboots) in order and eventually found the reference to this Adobe tech note in the forum and it worked first time. Obviously, it probably won't fix everybody, but it definitely fixed mine. I see it mentioned a few times in this forum thread so I thought I would go ahead and let everyone know it worked for me.

Again, reference Adobe's Flash Player TechNote "Download SubInACL from Microsoft to fix permission issues that prevent the Flash Player Installation, http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=fb1634cb"
