Question

continuous download of Flash Player

This has been going on for quite sometime and I've just never found any solution. On sites with Flash it asks me to download the player. I have the player already, but I download it anyway. The box on the Flash site shows that yes, I do have Flash installed now. Then I go back to the site that uses Flash and I'm back to the start - please download Flash Player.

I can't understand why if it's on my computer, why the site keeps asking me to download it again, yet it shows I do have it on my computer.

I started to use Macromedia Flash 8 Training from the Source, James English, and needed to play Flash in one of the tutorials. It sent me to the download site. I downloaded, shows the Flash movement in the sample box that if you have Flash you will see it in the box. I go back to the Flash site and once again - wants me to download Flash.

So it's just a continuous circle with no end.

Would anyone have ANY idea at all why something like this would happen? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I don't know what else to try.

    >>>>If you are having an issue installing the Flash Player with Windows Internet Explorer, but you can install it with other browsers on the same machine, you may have a damaged system registry or incorrect permissions in the registry<<<<

I have a systems registry repair that I use all the time, so I can rule this one out.

It appears that some screen savers (electric sheep is one) or programs look for a "flash.ocx" instead of "flash9b.ocx" and this causes the problem.

    SOLUTION:

    Copy: "...windows/system32/macromed/flash/flash9b.ocx"
Paste: it as a copy of flash9b.ocx then...
RENAME: the COPIED FILE to "flash.ocx"
IMPORTANT: do not delete the original flash9b.ocx just make a copy of named "flash.ocx"

This "fix" has worked for a lot of people that have programs or screen savers that look for the original flash.ocx file which it can't find causing in some cases for I.E. to close (or other programs) and the resultant error message.

Yes, and my problem is that I have to install it a gazillion times and it only works once on the Adobe site where it was installed. Flash plays, says installation was successful. Yadda, yadda, yadda... Once off that page, it's back to square one.

I have had the same problem and have tried everything possible, but it now works and here is what I did... It used to occasionally work on my wife's windows profile but once the computer was shut down it wouldn't work again...Once again I used the adobe flash remover and restarted the system, I then installed flash player 7 with a link that I got from these posts, I tried to view you tube and was unable to view it and got the same old install flash player 9 prompt. ..So as so many times before I clicked on the download now link and installed flashplayer 9... I did not restart the system and went back to you tube and for some reason it's working... It works on all the windows profiles on my computer and it works after the computer has been shut down and brought back up, which it did not do before... So if you've tried it all... what can it hurt...

There are several different problems here. Some people have problems getting Flash Player 9 to work but some, like me, are having problems getting it installed. For those in my situation a stand alone installer would probably solve the issue. I do not understand why Adobe do not provide this and I am forced to use the installation page which does not work for me.

All right, I've read it all, and at times it was getting really complicated.
I used partly your suggestions and partly my own ideas AND IT WORKED!!; here is what I did:
I remembered that things went wrong after installing FP9, so I decided to go back at FP8, which had been working fine with YouTube and other sites. So, I did as suggested, used the exe uninstaller, reboot, removed (all=3) remaining files from the flash folder in system 32, reboot again and installed version 8. If you look it up in Google you will find it the cellars (=archives) of Adobe.
Let them figure it out first, so far FP8 works fine!

I forgot, this is the site where you can get FP8.

My problem is that I cannot *install* Flash Player 9 and I think I have narrowed down the cause as I explain in a separate thread I started: "Cannot install Flash Player 9 w/ win98se" http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=184&threadid=1227050

At this point my question is whether there is a manual installer I can download which does not depend on the browser and active X doing the installing. Please see that thread for details.

    >>>Why not select your prefered browser, uninstall the rest and download the flash player again. >>>

Well, I develop web sites so I need all the browsers I can get in order to check web pages, as they view differently in different browsers.

I also use IE7 but that is the browser that is the problem for me (and AOL of course because it uses IE).

I was interested in using the SubInAcL tool that was recommended to download. I use Registry Pro, but maybe the one mentioned will solve other issues.

However, when I went to this page: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=fb1634cb I didn't see "download" anywhere for the SubInAcL tool??

Warning The following solution involves the Windows System Registry. Editing or manipulating the registry incorrectly can result in serious system damage which may require re-installation of the operating system. If you are not comfortable editing the registry, then take your system to a professional. If you choose to proceed, then it is essential that you create a complete system backup and a Windows System Restore Point before proceeding. Adobe Systems cannot be held responsible for damage resulting from this information.

***If you are not comfortable editing the registry, then take your system to a professional.***

For information regarding this microsoft tool please read the following:

    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=fb1634cb

You can download the Microsoft tool, SubInACL and reset.cmd here:

    http://www.supportflash.com/reset.zip

Download the “reset.cmd” and the “subinacl.exe” to the desktop
    Close out all applications
    Run the “reset.cmd” file
It will open a DOS like terminal and start running through registry keys
It may take five to twenty minutes depending on the system
When it is finished it will say “press any key to continue”
At this point you can download the latest Flash Player from here: http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer

Please let me know if you have any questions about this.

Basically on my WinXP account, Admin rights, can play videos on Youtube w/out problem.
But my mother's account, which has Admin rights as well, Youtube doesn'tplay => "you do not have latest flash..."

I understand Windows Rights might be messed up and you suggest using the tool.
Well, I used the "uninstall Flash" tool from adobe site and removed it clean. Then installed latest ver. of flash and it passed the installation test on Adobe site. Now, at this point, I have good reason to believe Flash DID get installed properly, correct?

Then this solution you suggest - resetting Win. admin right etc. ...is not a solution to my problem?

Any alternative solutions, less dangereous? and more concrete?

    thanks

Here is a screen shot of the Advanced Security Settings for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT > Permissions

And I'll also compare that with the ones you gave me a link to and see if I can see anything different.
