Flash 10 hangs Internet Explorer 7 on Vista?

I installed Flash 10 on my dad's computer last Saturday. He emailed me today to tell me that Internet Explorer 7 had been a few times over the past few days which he things started around Tuesday. Since the only change to IE7 made recently was upgrading from Flash 9 to Flash 10, Flash 10 is my suspect.

Are there any reports of Flash 10 causing IE7 to hang in Vista?

www.vampirefreaks.com homepage has no flash to test as far as I can see. Please provide more specific URL to test.

I have flash WIN 10,0,22,87/Vista (HP and HB versions) and can't see crashes anymore.

Please test what versione of Flash do you have here: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_15507

If you have an old one, please uninistall it from usual Windows Control Panel, then download the mere exe from www.filehippo.com (it's useless to install the Adobe browser ActiveX plugin to downlad and install it IMHO)

im sorry. but.. i got flashplayer 10.

Just use a Vista machine. Install flashplayer 10 and go to www.vampirefreaks.com and it will crash.
The only browser who gives me a clue what went wrong is Google chrome. It says: the following plug-in failed to respond: shockwave player. Want to stop the plugin? yes/no.

thats all i can tell u. Im sorry

You're making a bit of confusion...
First: as you can read above I specified I do have Vista: «I have flash WIN 10,0,22,87/Vista (HP and HB versions) and can't see crashes anymore.».
Second: the problem you experience is probably caused by Shockwave Player, not Flash. I know by direct experience that Shockwave is still very buggy and indeed crashes on Vista, for all, if you simply enable DEP protection by system prefs or separetely only in IE7(8) (there is the option ON by default on Vistax64: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > “Enable memory protection to help mitigate online..."). So I agree with you that Shockwave is the problem.
I already sent bug reports to Adobe using: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform about this annoying bug but they released a newer version some days back, with the same bug still unfixed. All they need to do is to recompile the whole thing using updated ATL libraries version 7.1+... :(

Check you DEP settings, system wide and IE specific, or uninstall useless Shockwave (thank you Adobe) and try again.

anyone checked it with ie8 yet?

well sorry to be a bastard. But i tried everything. IE, FireFox, Opera, Google Chrome. All crash after updating flash player. an example of a crash: www.vampirefreaks.com or any website with flashplayer(shockwave) in it.

i read something about administrator issues. But thats not the problem. I installed is as ADMIN. Still it wont work I treid earlier versions of flashplayer but somehow they manage to install 10 again.

so no mather what everybody is saying. The problem is in Flash PLayer. It sux that Adobe is very hard to reach when i comes to this problem.

If i was the only one with this problem i would say its mine. But everybody i speak has the same problem

    kind regards,
    Laurens

    CORRECTION!!

not all flashplayer sites crash. Youtube is workin. But still i think its a problem for Adobe. Cause before the updates and stuff sites didnt crash

Version 10.0.22.87 doesn't crash or hang anymore but has big stuttering problems with HQ flash videos like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AE2nOoumcXE&eurl=http://www.idealsoftblog.it/2009/03/hokuto-no-ken-flash-edition-ken-il.html

Useless to say that version 9.0.159.0 works fine also with HQ instead... :(

Every v9 version with same security updates of current v10 is avaliable at: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb406791

    Hi Hexaae-
    OUCH!
You need to post a warning about the site's volume setting!
Seems to play OK, a bit tinny perhaps (prob my speakers). Dl bar up ahead of the play bar, so vid OK.
This new FP10 needs an update, I guess. I finally got it working OK (except for CNN) on the old XP laptop. It took BIOS updates (3 of 'em) and some resource tweakin'. CNN will work OK if I hold back/pause the play bar and let it load ahead.
You got 9.0.159.0 working OK? It's had a lot of probs. I don't know why Adobe updated the trusty 9.0.151.0, it was OK (as you had proven).

No crashes or hangs for me too (3 days test 'till now) with 10.0.22.87...
Don't know about buffering issues... I usually think it's a networking problem when there is stuttering, are you sure that with v9 at the same time and from the same network you don't have stuttering problems?
A good test would be to run v9 on a machine and v10 on the other, on the same home-lan and compare....

    Hi Hexaae-
Yeah, the pc's were fine set up w/v901240, but websites have changed now, as well.
I tested a lot when v1001236 was new (Oct last year or so) and listed it earlier in this thread. Mostly geared toward the IE7 freeze/crash thing (since that's the subject of this thread) but also on the vid thing, as I started testing for other threads. Used various computers, corded, wireless, dl speeds (even dial-up), etc..
I guess I expected too much from the new Adobe FP10 like "TA-DA! Here's the FIX you've waited for!".
I've been at this since Oct., might need to turn off the pc and go skiing.....
    Yeah, I'm whining...(wheh! wheh!)....Thanks for listening.

    Hi Hexaae-
Thanks for the info. How's the vids on your pc?
I couldn't resist and loaded 10.0.22.87 onto an older XPSP2 laptop, upped it from v10.12.36.
I had this one IE7/FP10 crash-free and pretty good w/vids, although sometimes shakey w/CNN vids.
Rented time on 100mbps at Kinkos, updated it via the FlashUtil10a, rebooted and.... couldn't get it to crash (yay!), but back to some vid probs (buffering issues) (boo!). Uninstalled, reinstalled via Adobe (no google toolbar- why do they even offer this?) and same results (boo!). Fooled around a bit, got it up to OK on Yahoo and YouTube, fair/ok on MSN, but still prob on CNN (did the "hold the play bar back and let the dl bar move ahead" trick) and CNN was fair/ok, but not w/o some effort. This is all at 100mbps, so results will not be as good at usual home speeds.
So, seems like the new FP10 is not quite 100% yet. I admit I'm a bit disappointed, and not sure what to tell others in the forum. BUT, at least the IE7/freeze/crash issue is resolved. I'll have to do s'more testing and tshooting, I guess. I'm kinda between and about this...

Thanks. This means that v9 will continue its development... useful if we'll ever need to downgrade again keeping the system safe with latest security fixes.

Yesterday I've installed v 10.0.22.87 (no hangs or crashes for 1 day). I'll report the next week if v10 is finally stable...

    Hi Hexaae-
For your installation to FP 1002287, did you uninstall v901510 first, or install new v10 over v9?
Adobe hasn't updated their instructions page, so I'm curious 'bout the v9 to new v10 jump.
Old v10 was supposed to have a auto-feature to uninstall previous versions (like Java now has) but it didn't always work. It did work for me on several pcs (v901240 to v10), but I may have just been lucky....
I want to be sure I give out correct info and not make things worse for folks. Thanks.

Maybe they fixed the bugs in new version. A pair of crashes have been fixed in the changelog:

Flash Player 10.0.22.87 includes security enhancements described in USecurity Bulletin APSB09-01U.

The following issues have been fixed in Flash Player 10.0.22.87:
    • Flash Player 10 crashes in IE7 due to the use of a dynamic TextField as a mask on another display object when the field set to anti-alias for readability. (FP-1238/2256938)
    • A sound stream error #2032 will cause the playback of a separate stream to stop playback. (FP-910/2251944)
    • Japanese text mojibake (garbled) at Input Text in Flash 5 swf. (2223727)
    • Ming created file does not play in Flash Player 10 in any browser. (FP-769/2217038)
    • FileReference.save() can save invalid Windows filename like "sticky." so users are never able to delete. (2202963)
    • Setting bitmap width/height before super() crashes player. (FP-760/2216975)
    • Audio is scratchy with static/streamed with sample rate greater than 44kHz. (FP-862/2216961)
    • Seeking H264 video on the first few frames causes IE to crash. (FP-913/2216957)
    • Fullscreen in Flash Player 10 hangs with Flex 3 horizontal slider. (FP-812/2216948)
    • Matrix3D AS3 class implementation is difficult to use for general math. (2216936)
    • The Origin header should be put on the banned headers list. (2202975)
    • Using drawingAPI2 in certain conditions when the Shape is not yet on the displayList can crash. (FP-761/2202966)
    • Adding 2 vectors with float4 input and output produces incorrect result. (2202964)
    • Attempting to install to a non-C:\ drive results in 'lack of disk space' error. (2202957)
    • Fix AS APIs' inconsistent handling of NaN parameters on different platforms. (FP-612,FP-903, FP-964/2200454)
    • SampleDataEvent playback in IE7 window crashes browser when new Flash window displayed. (FP-985/1935068)
    • When receiving multiple speex audio streams, audio may be garbled. (1934243)
    • When the end of a video is reached at certain websites, IE crashes instead of showing the next frame. (FP-1123/1932362)
    • UIA mistakenly over-enforced in previous release. (2262898)
    • Japanese characters are mojibake when they are entered into an input text filed on the Mac Player. (FP-40/2269305)

    Hi Hexaae-
FP version 9.0.151.0 has been updated to 9.0.159.0
Added security features for older systems (and folks who want to use it anyway).
It's at the same place, kb406791.
Thanks for the info on the new vFP10.
I noticed they've added in some stuff to prep for the new/improved forum (real stickys!).
Maybe this is THE FIX we've all waited for and Morac can finally get his dad a working FP10.

Who has tested new version 10.0.22.87?
Does it still suffer this crash/freeze bug with IE?
