Question

Flash 10 Won't Play

  • May 24, 2011

OS: Vista SP2 64-bit, hardware DEP enabled

Browser: Firefox 4.0.1

Other plugins: Shockwave (but I see no animation on Adobe's test page)

Java Console 6.0.25

AdBlock Plus (Disabled)

NoScript was totally uninstalled

Adobe Test page reports "You have version 10,3,181,14 installed"

YouTube seems OK, but many, many other sites won't play anything.  The blank white or black window allows setting of Flash Options, so I disabled GPU acceleration.  Here's a site that won't play (in fact, nothing from ABC News plays anymore):

The problem was LSO cookies. Installing Better Privacy 1.51 as an add-on to FireFox 4.0.1 to manage LSO storage took care of cleaning up those monster cookies downloaded by either Adobe or the serving site.

The problem has occurred again on a Vimeo site, Flash wouldn't play.  I used Better Privacy to delete all LSO cookies with Firefox remaining open and the problem disappeared.  Adobe has some serious problems with LSOs interfering with each other using both Firefox 4.0.1 and IE9.

Hi Q, I would have thought that the opposite would have happened in removing the LSO cookie for the site. I fail to see the logic for a website to Install an LSO so the site doesn't work, only to have the user remove it so it will work. I'm not saying what you found didn't happen or how you resolved it, just that it makes no sense to me:-)

Between the browser cookies, the Global Settings various Panels and how the Flash Player Settings Manager in the Control panel works together is confusing to me. Then the way History and the LSO's work with those, adds to the confusion. IE8, IE9 and FF4 somehow work with those changes also. I know I'm blonde, but had hoped I could have figured all of that out by now:-)

There are so many variables in the above, that it's difficult for me to find how all of the Settings need to be configured in order to accomplish the purpose.

I think if the browsers would have a separate way to delete browsers cookies, history and LSO's, that would help. That didn't happen though. With those 3 browser versions, the way it is now, one must use a third party application just to remove browser cookies if they want to keep certain LSO's for their reasons. I use XP with IE6 and I don't need a third party for that, or the LSO's for that matter.

I don't know what the answer is in what I just described and have no explanation in what you have encountered.

I'm sure there is an answer somewhere, but I don't have one yet.

    Thanks,

Hi, This may be helpful, so check it out. http://support.microsoft.com/fixit/

Have you ever used the file checker for Vista? It takes some time to run and filters to use when running. Then a site so you can interpret the scan. Pat knows more about this than I do, I've never used it but am aware of it.

    Thanks,

Thanks for reminding me about system file checker.  I haven't used it in awhile because:  1) it's a real pain, and 2) the results always seem to point out only hash mismatches in desktop.ini files.  The log file it produces has more words in it than a TV preacher's script.  ZZzzzz.  I ran it and found no problems.  Secunia PSI gives me a 100% freshness guarantee for every single application on this fine machine, and Driver Whiz does the same for every driver.

So I'm guessing the problem is, as you say, some well hidden, ridiculously unrelated, non-intuitive, never referenced system setting buried so deep somewhere in the registry that light has yet to reach it.  Thanks, MS.  And yes, I'll take Bill Gates phone number.

Aside-- My avatar is there in my profile, for whatever purpose it may serve.

Hi Q, Impressive Avatar:-)  I've seen a little of that file checker, pretty techy:-) This is supposed to interpret the file report:

Speaking of the Registry, have you ever ran the SubInACL? http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/494/cpsid_49419.html

I'll get Bill's number for you:-)

I have downloaded Flash 10.3.181.23 on Windows 7, IE 9 and while I get sound, I either receive no picture or a scrambled picture.  I did not have problems before the latest download.  Am I missing something?

Hi, I know you didn't address your issue to me, but you need to start your own discussion/thread. This thread is quite long

and your issues are totally different, believe me:-)

To answer your questions and troubleshoot your issues will be easier for you and whichever person helps you to keep them separate.

Thanks for thinking about my situation.

The  "Do Not Save Encrypted Pages to Disk" option doesn't exist in FireFox 4.0.1, but I tried a bunch of settings I hadn't bothered with before.  And, as it turns out, with good reason.  No effect.

It's the NASA site that's the most puzzling.  How the streaming live video will function properly but the cannned videos will not play at all just squeezes my Wheaties.

Please let me know what you need from me to document this "feature" for the code types and I'll do my best to put it together.

    Thanks,

    +Quantum

    June 8, 2011

Hi, That Setting  "Do not save encrypted pages to disk" is for IE. Didn't you upgrade to IE9? That is the browser that this Setting appears to effect. That thread I linked to is not the only thread that mentioned this so I thot it would be worth a try.

When you say "feature", I'm not clear on which one you mean.

    Thanks,

Info on the FP update of 10.3.181.23 & 10.3.181.22:

An important vulnerability has been identified in Adobe Flash Player 10.3.181.16 and earlier versions for Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Solaris, and Adobe Flash Player 10.3.185.22 and earlier versions for Android. This universal cross-site scripting vulnerability (CVE-2011-2107) could be used to take actions on a user's behalf on any website or webmail provider, if the user visits a malicious website. There are reports that this vulnerability is being exploited in the wild in active targeted attacks designed to trick the user into clicking on a malicious link delivered in an email message.

Adobe recommends users of Adobe Flash Player 10.3.181.16 and earlier versions for Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Solaris update to Adobe Flash Player 10.3.181.22 (10.3.181.23 for ActiveX). Adobe expects to make available an update for Flash Player 10.3.185.22 for Android during the week of June 6, 2011.

Thanks for the new info.  I was surprised to discover the update early today, so what the heck, I installed it and am running blah.22.  Went to the Adobe test page and it plays the animation and reports the correct new version.  Unfortunately, the problem wasn't solved.  I'll try gathering the stuff for tech support and keep you informed.  I would certainly like to see some of the latest NASA videos.  It's crazy the live stream works great but the canned stuff won't open.

Aside: I received an email from the forum editors saying my avatar picture was approved, but neither your nor my avatar shows up, just the same old boring grayed out head profile.  Also, a lot of the text formatting options in this forum editor don't "stick."  They'll show up just before posting, but when posted they disappear.  ZZzzzz...

    June 6, 2011

Hi, I was surprised myself, LOL Hard to keep up. At least we'll get a break with Patch Tuesday; not until 6/14/11:-) Which reminds me, that when this video issue is resolved, you need that SP3:-)

Once you have your Avatar approved, don't you have to "do" something? I've never done that, so am not sure. I'll see what I can find out. It seems I never find the time to get an avatar.

I know what you mean about the text not "sticking". I usually have to click it more than once.

It is a pain that you can't see the NASA videos with any browser.

Update: FP has updated, please see here: http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/  Haven't had time yet to see the release notes! Notice the different versions for Windows using IE and Windows using non-IE browsers.

Hi, This thread: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/852458?start=50&tstart=0 has to do with this:

http://blogs.adobe.com/flashruntimereleases/2011/05/31/flash-player-10-3-181-16-windows-activex-released/ The Knowledge Based Article is here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/904/cpsid_90416.html

The above explains the reason and solution for the issues with FP 10.3.181.14 and IE9, which resulted in FP 10.3.181.15 and the final release of the 10.3.181.16.

If those issues don't apply to you, then one of the two following links would.

http://forums.adobe.com/thread/853591?tstart=0  Post#2  which may have the same info as the following link.

    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/839/cpsid_83952.html

Will find out what the latest release of FP 10.3.181.23 is.

*Hi, DEP info for various Settings:*

    http://www.mydigitallife.info/disable-and-turn-off-or-enable-or-turn-on-data-execution-prevention-dep-in-windows-vista/

+As I mentioned before, the DEP setting has no effect, but if it's enabled and Flash or FF (or any other app) tries to execute code in an area reserved for data, Vista, XP or 7 would scream.  DEP is a hardware function that provides an interrupt so an OS error handler can prevent a sneaky virus trick.  No one has any business executing code in the stack space or other areas reserved for data.+

    *eidnolb,

Just for fun and to satisfy some kind of morbid curiosity I decided to visit a lot of sites that possibly show videos.  Almost every single major site worked just fine, including msnbc, NASA, Hubble, History Channel, Warner Bros., MGM, Turner Classic, TNT, and many more.

The Discover Channel displayed the advertising syndrome.  The initial ad plays just fine, but the content that follows won't start.  It just hangs.

    The Discovery Channel link

Here's something crazy -- CBS News webpages display as if a video were present, but right clicking reveals JPG image properties, not the Flash settings.  What's up with that?  Try this link and see what your results are.  So much for ABC and CBS,  I'm not wasting time on NBC.

You should know how to disable your Anti-Virus/Spyware, so I'm just going to post the info before it gets too late here.

Download and SAVE to your Desktop the Uninstaller:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html
Download and SAVE to your Desktop the Installer for IE- use the EXE Installer
    http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/fp_distribution3.html
Download and SAVE to your Desktop the Installer for FF- use the EXE Installer for plugin based (from the same site)
Close all browser windows, you only want to be looking at your Desktop.
Disable any messenger services, as yahoo, msn, etc in the system tray(area near the clock)

Make sure Adblock Plus is Disabled also

    Disable your Anti-Virus

Be sure to use the Administrator Account.

Run the Uninstaller and when finished, Reboot(restart) your computer.

Go to the SysWOW64 location and make sure all Flash files are Uninstalled and nothing other than a txt doc is there. If any Flash files are still there, Run the

Uninstaller again and check. Reboot if necessary to have used the Uninstaller again.

Now check and make sure the Anti-Virus is still disabled.

Run the Installer for IE, then Run the Installer for FF. When finished, Reboot

Reenable your Anti-Virus but keep Adblock Plus disabled until after testing the browsers.

Then go to this test site and test each browser:

    http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

You may want to print these instructions to make it easier to follow. If you have any questions, let me know.

Followed all your notes.  I uninstalled everything Java and Adobe.  Everything.  Then I went to SysWOW64 and deleted anything Adobe there.  I also ran regedit and deleted all keys that had to do with Flash, Shockwave and Air.  The only AV software is MS Security Essentials (MSE), which has never interfered in the past since I've allowed all flash content through, but just to be safe I completely disabled it as well.  Then did a total reboot.

Next, I ran FF4.0.1 and IE9-32 bit and installed only Java plug-ins and Adobe Flash.  The test page worked and so did a lot of other flash content.  But the sites with which I had trouble still won't play in either browser.

I give up.  Either it's A) a bug in Flash that is related to certain servers or content containers or B) interference from some other program on the system.  I can't imagine what that could be, since there is very little installed on this notebook.  All drivers and programs are up to date, verified by Secunia PSI and Device Manager.  It's just a high-end travelling computer used to play Dolby surround BluRay, check e-mail, run the home office network via VPN and surf the web.  Not a single low-rent program on the hard drive, no crapware, mostly things like MS Works and a lot of stand-alone astronomy software.

I'm certain I can live without the video content that won't play, although it's discouraging to be unable to solve this mystery.

If you think of anything else, let me know.  I'll probably not spend much more time on the problem and just chalk it up to my misplaced trust in automatic updates.  I should know better not to update anything important without cloning the C: drive every time.

Thanks much for all your help.

Hi, Well that didn't accomplish what we wanted. So Flash Player is Installed in IE9 now.

I reviewed a few threads that users were having trouble viewing, such as ESPN/NFL/MLB & BBC, etc. This pertains to the Global Storage Settings Panel. Both of the boxes need to be checked. Don't check the Never ask again until you read what it does or doesn't do. I would try this and then check the ABCnews site & see if that makes a difference.

    http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager03.html

The other Setting that works with the Global Storage Setting is the Website Storage Settings Panel. So read that also.

    http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager07.html

IE9 have new features and among them are the ActiveX Filtering & Compatibility View which you may or may not be aware of, but need to be if you want to use IE9.

    Main site: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/products/ie-9/features

    ActiveX Filtering:  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/products/ie-9/features/activex-filtering

A site that has a better explanation of ActiveX Filtering with screenshots:

    http://www.mydigitallife.info/how-to-disable-or-enable-turn-off-or-on-activex-filtering-in-ie9/

    Compatibility View: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/products/ie-9/features/compatibility-view

(Thread in Post#3 from a user on HOW Compatibility works: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3648794#3648794 )

You may not want to use IE9 after seeing all of this, but some of it would apply to FF as well. The Global Storage Settings & the Website Storage Settings. So I would suggest trying that first and using FF see if that helps.

    Thanks,

    eidnolb

Hi, Just a couple of items to check. FF has on their blocklist McAfee Site Advisor version 3.3.1 or older for FF 4.

Silverlight- This article is dated 2/11 but still may be valid:

    http://www.mydigitallife.info/adobe-flash-and-silverlight-cannot-play-video-not-install-in-ie9/

I don't know if FF would have release notes for what changes were in the vs 4.0 and the 4.0.1, but that may help if you know where to find it.

    *From eidnolb*

*Do  you have in Programs & Features any Java versions other than the  latest version? If so you should remove all except that one and then  reboot. Old Java versions are a security risk; but websites use the  oldest version when you have more than one installed. Don't ask me why  but they do.*

+Well, that makes perfect sense, but only if you're from another solar system.  Older versions with priority?  Go figure.

I disabled all but Java Console 6.0.25, since those fine folks didn't  provide any way to uninstall older versions, and cpl doesn't list them.  I guess they're just supposed to be useless wasters of disk space and registry resources forever.

*Just a couple of items to check. FF has on their blocklist McAfee Site Advisor version 3.3.1 or older for FF 4.*

+That and other research indicated it was only for FF4 beta, and is  supported by 4.0 and 4.0.1 (my version).  But it's totally disabled now.

*Silverlight- This article is dated 2/11 but still may be valid:*

+This applies only to IE9, according to the article.  I disabled  Silverlight anyway, just in case.  Besides, I don't think it's ever been  invoked.

+I also disabled hardware acceleration globally in FF401 and, after all  changes listed, rebooted the whole 'puter.  Good list of ideas, but no  jolly.  Rats.

+Thanks again for your help, I'm stumped,

    May 27, 2011

Hi, well, since we've checked almost everything I'm about out of ideas. Now IE9 have a Compatibility View if a website isn't working as it did prior to IE9. I don't know if FF have anything like that or not.

It could be also that the websites that are giving you a problem haven't updated for FP 10.3.181.14 yet either.

I think if this were my system, I would do a manual Uninstall and a manual Install of Flash Player. Let me know if you want to do that and I'll post the procedure that is what I think is the best way to ensure success. Perhaps a glitch happened with that FP Uninstall/Install.

Other than that, and inquiring of those websites if they are supporting FP 10.3, I have nothing else to try.

    Let me know,
