Flash9b.ocx crash once again

Hi, all

I'd really like to see an official message from Adobe concerning the issue with Flash9b.ocx crashing in IE. Surely they must have received a lot of messages from disgruntled users.

I work for an online newspaper and we have several hundred thousand page impressions every day. And for lots of users our front page causes the Flash player to crash. It's practically impossible to isolate which banner ad(s) that will lead to a crash.

My theory is that there are certain ActionScript commands that are handled in a different manner in the new player, while swfs that contain only animation will work.

Yup.. that linked crashed the IE 7 session that it was running in in about 3 minutes, abending with the following msg: "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I wanna thank both jpwrunyan and BWolfe for going outside the box in trying to at least provide some kind of answer to whats going on...

    FYI
I have escalated this to our Adobe Technical Account Manager, who has already been in touch collating relevant information.
    I shall post anything relevant.

Syar2003.. didnt work for me either... Leave that weather link page up for 2 minutes and it crashes. Listen... if we just delete the flash player, do we lose much other than the ability to see adds we dont want to see anyway?

BTW, anybody try Red Lichite's fix.. Someone verify it works on XP before we go through the steps, since its considerably more involved than Syar's supposed 'fix' which didnt fix at all.. Thanks. Think adoble will EVER step up to the plate? .. This problem where Flash9 causes IE7 (in my case.. seems to effect earlier IE versions also) to crash, must be effecting so many people that its inconceivable that they havent been able to fix it yet. how is this possible ?

Also... this is weird.. The link that was posted above, http://www.weather.com/weather/map/interactive/80918?from=mycity_wx has ALWAYS crashed IE for me.. Its the only link Ive found that seems to do it. Using weather.com and the main map animation doesnt cause me the kind of quick crash, within 2 minutes, that this one does.. weird..

Well, not to let Adobe completely off the hook, but IE is also a problem.
Due to specifications rules set out by our client, our application is only "guaranteed" to work on IE 6 for our clients.
Well, after extensive testing, IE 6 (and probably 7) has several memory leaks when combined with Javascript. I think we all know that IE's javascript functionality is poor at best.
We contacted Microsoft as well as Adobe and MS basically told us, "anything could go wrong with a leak like this--and we will fix it eventually--but since we don't make Flash Player, we can't help you with your application."
So basically, until Microsoft fixes IE 6, there is still a limit to how much Adobe can do to make Flash player work. A house built on a bad foundation, no matter how well built, is still unstable. And developing stuff for IE is quite frankly like building a house on top of a marsh.

Now, what Adobe fails to do is to make this clear to people who have to make applications. Why? Maybe because Microsoft is now competing with their own Silverlight RIA tool. You can bet that if Silverlight didn't work, Microsoft would do something about it since its theirs. Now Flash Player is their competitor, so I doubt Microsoft cares about fixing IE just so their competitor's application will work. Adobe obviously would never want to admit this. Adobe's answer? AIR, I presume.

Finally, the only think I feel obliged to take Adobe to task for is that everytime they release a new player, they GUARANTEE that legacy applications will still work. This guarantee is fallacious. With FP 9 the memory management has changed such that it is exposed to vulnerabilities and instabilities in IE 6's own memory management where previously it was not. So, although in a "perfect world" legacy applications for say, FP 7 should work in FP 9, in reality, they do not. I also understand that it is unrealistic to expect Adobe and MS to cooperate since they are now competitors, but I really really wish Adobe would stop making these stupid guarantees regarding Flash Player and MIE that prompt users to update their flash player and then, by so doing, destabilize legacy applications. Adobe does not suffer from the repurcussions directly. Who does? The application developer. With FP 9's release, suddenly our client is barraging us with complaints that our application does not work. Obviously, if they hadn't updated FP 7 to FP 9 in the first place, then our application would be fine. But then again, THEY are the CUSTOMER and they only updated because, like I said, Adobe GUARANTEED that contents made in AS 2.0 would work in FP 9. Thanks a hell of a lot, Adobe.

The solution? Unfortunately there is none for us with our legacy applications. We have to admit to our client that we cannot support the application we made for them. If there's a lawsuit, well, there is a lawsuit and you better believe Adobe will be hearing from us--but I doubt it will come to that. We have to simply learn from this horrible experience and move on. From now on, if our clients want us to make content to run in IE then our response has to be to use Silverlight. No more Flash. If they want us to make contents in Flash then our response has to be use AIR. No more IE. That is the only way to guarantee stability, or at the very least, guarantee a responsible response from either proprietor.

    In conclusion:
Adobe Technology + Microsoft Technology = misery.

I have to say I'm absolutely floored that this is still an issue. 3 seperate PC's, running 3 different OS's with 3 different video cards. Go to weather.com, go to their interactive map and click on the play button. That is the quickest way to make it happen. However it happens all the time other places also.

Every single one of them crashes due to flash. C'mon Adobe, it's been months.

This is really quite ridiculous. Why are people still using Flash? Adobe has clearly not been a good caretaker of the product Macromedia worked so hard to make a household name.

    Shame on you,

    Hello !
Iv'e been plagued with this ocx crash in both XP Pro and Vista flash9c.ocx or flash9d.ocx 00000005 appcrash.
Think I finally have found the cure and should share it here.

In Vista it seems flashplayer install creates a bogus registry entry at :
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\TypeLib\{57A0E746-3863-4D20-A811-950C84F1DB9B}\1.1\0\win32
Vaulue i had in a completely new Vista (fresh) install and activeX install from adobe website was
    C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9d.ocx\2

String ends up pointing to a directory 2 (which of course is non existing)

    String changed to
    C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9d.ocx
    And all crashing has stopped.

It's the same with XP - string ends with directory 2
    But classes typelib was another

To check - do a search in registry (Vista or XP) for the word/key flash9d.ocx and when the flash9d.ocx\2 string comes up
modify it.Locations may differ - if it comes up with \2 ANYWHERE modify it to :
    C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9d.ocx,2
    or just
    C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9d.ocx

I'm guessing it should perhaps be a parameter like e.g C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9d.ocx,2
But leaving it like "C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9d.ocx" works now fine for me.

    Syar,
I am afraid I couldn't follow that at all.
Can you explain one more time a little more carefully the steps you took and with more detail?
I looked through my registry and could not find anything like what you described...

It sounds like you simply had an error during installation of the new player...

Well folks, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but yesterday night I went out and replaced my RAM memory. Not that I think it matters, but I went from 1 gig to 2. Anyhow, since it has been in my cpu, I have yet to encounter that ***damn crash error I used to see with regularity. I don't exactly know if maybe I'm just getting lucky to this point or not but my IE seems to have stabilized. Just thought y'all might be interested in hearing that. Do with it what you will.......

    "Uppdatera flash - minska krascher i IE7

This above can be read in a Swedish IT Magazine. Rough translation.: Update to the new version of Flash. As it is well known that the IE7 crashes all the time it might be better with the new Flash version.
My IE7 crashes all the time when I use my Flash Player. I have updated to new version of Flash and have a full version of IE7. Sometimes it freeze the PC completely.

It is a very bad advertisment for Adobe and Flash Player and their inability to solve the problems.

I dont know if this helps, but I connect via a Sprint Novatel U720. Flash apps ALWAYS kick me off. I run with an open Task Manager to watch my CPU usage.
When I'm using anything Flash (e.g. watching anything on youtube.com) I can watch my CPU usage fluctuating upwards. It inevitably hits the ceiling (100%). After about 5-10 seconds, my Novatel shuts down, disconnects, and often has to be closed and reopened.

If I pause the video then CPU usage drops back down. When I resume play, it ramps back up. I have found that I can generally watch a video AND stay connected if I just pause the video for a second everytime it maxes out my CPU, but it is very frustrating trying to watch Flash video content while pausing every 5 seconds :(

I have also found that this is MUCH more likely when I have multiple tabs with Flash content. Only Flash kicks off my Novetel, nothing else does it. Even if another program maxes out my CPU, I stay connected. But Flash videos ALWAYS disconnect me.

By the way, I also get IE7 crashes caused by FP9 :]

I've totally disbled Flash on my PC by adding a registry value. Since I did this, Internet Explorer has been rock solid. Before that, IE crashed about once a day.

Add a "Compatibility Flags" value of 0x400, as described in this article:
    http://windowsxp.mvps.org/noflash.htm

This will totally disable all Flash, including download prompts, everything. It's as though Flash never existed. It's wonderful.

I don't use Flash for any important applications - it was only used by advertisments on web pages. I can happily live without these; but I couldn't live with IE contstantly crashing. So I am enjoying life without Flash, and I am much happier for it.

Before I disabled Flash I sent several crash dumps to Adobe; hopefully they can determine the cause and fix it. If/when that problem is fixed, I might consider re-enabling Flash on my machine; but not before.

    Cheers

I'm also in the boat of following the step-by-step for creating a log file, having Flash crash (I have 9.0.45.0...flash9c.ocx...took all of 5 minutes after install for the first crash), but no error log is generated.
I'm a web developer who also happens to do a lot of web browsing, and this crashing business (and I'm really trying not to be profane, but I am so incredibly upset at how much time this thing has wasted) is causing me massive headaches. Does the machine need to be rebooted or something to get this log file to get generated? Does Vista's UAC locking have something to do with the file not getting generated?
