Flash9b.ocx crash once again

Hi, all

I'd really like to see an official message from Adobe concerning the issue with Flash9b.ocx crashing in IE. Surely they must have received a lot of messages from disgruntled users.

I work for an online newspaper and we have several hundred thousand page impressions every day. And for lots of users our front page causes the Flash player to crash. It's practically impossible to isolate which banner ad(s) that will lead to a crash.

My theory is that there are certain ActionScript commands that are handled in a different manner in the new player, while swfs that contain only animation will work.

My browser is crashing several times a day this week.
It would be nice if a fix is released this weekend.

    Fault Address 3018AC1A:001891A C:\WINODWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9c.ocx

Also, this flash error log thing. I will try this, and see if i can get a report. Its just annoying that i dont know how to replicate it all the time. Thats the frustrating thing, so pinning it down is very difficult.

Because your case is outside of North America I cannot work on it myself (some crazy international law I can't remember the name of...) So i've asked my peer in EMEA to take it on personally.

I do see that you did get a response from the EMEA team (and yes, I can clearly see that wasn't helpful.. part of the big picture fixes I'm working on for Flash Player). The case is waiting for you to reply to that.

So you wrote previously about not being able to reply. Did that mean you weren't able to reply to the address the agent mailed you from??? Let me know so I can have that checked out..

But.. we absolutely MUST get a Flash Player crash log and the other information I've mentioned on this thread. We can't really do anything without that. And unfortunately steps to replicate are also an important part of the process. It's like fixing the car.. if you can't make it happen or describe it clearly we have no idea where to start.

Also in this case, since your company is developing Flash games you could have had your developers open a support case for the authoring tool. That would be helpful if they could find a consistent spot where a particular game crashes..

So I see in your next post that you got a crash but aren't seeing any logs.

Here are some modified instructions that might work better. Also, have you turned on any Windows logging? Those might also be helpful..

    Enabling log file generation

In order to allow log files to be created by the Flash Player you must first enable this option by placing the string, CrashLogEnable=1, into your mms.cfg file. Which means you must HAVE an mms.cfg file. It is not created by the Falsh Player install, it is a simple text file you must create yourself.

Instruction for creating and modifying the MMS.cfg file can be found here:
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashplayer/articles/flash_player_9_security.pdf.

Here is a similar note regarding modification of auto-update that identifies the location of the mms.cfg file. http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=16701594

Once mms.cfg is created and CrashLogEnable=1 then a Flash Player crash -should- generate a crash log.

    Locating log files
Open a command line prompt. (From the Start Menu choose Run… then type cmd in the dialog.
Type cd "Local Settings\Temp" at the command line prompt. Make sure that you enclose the Local Settings in quotation marks.
Type dir *.mdmp at the command line prompt. These are the log files that are to be sent to adobe.

If this fails to create a crash log then we're going to have to find another way to figure out what's going on. That's where 'steps to replicate' are going to be needed.

Dear Mr. Wolfe (or anyone else)
For those of us not in the US and using a variety of text formats (ANSI, ISO, SHIFT-JIS, UNICODE), when creating the mms.cfg file, do we need to beware of anything? Is it possible that the wrong text file format will result in the logs not being created as several people above have stated? I assume ANSI is the correct format....

At this point, I have totally removed FlashPlayer plugins from all web browsers on my computer and installed a killbit for the ActiveX control for Flash Player (and Shockwave Player) into the Windows registry.

Flash Player 9 (flash9b.ocx) crashes every browser I have tried (including the antiquated Netscape 4.8, which does not rely on the ActiveX control, per se).

Installing previous version seems not to be effective, as whenever you browse a page that relies upon FlashPlayer 9 specifically, and the animation includes FlashPlayer 9-specific Active Scripting controls without proper version checking, the software for the latest ActiveX control is downloaded (and installed, given your permission).

I never had the problem with previous versions (up to version 8), and locally produced animations work effectively with FlashPlayer 9 as long as the Active Scripting component is not called upon.

I have tried various settings for FlashPlayer to aleviate the problem, but certain advertisements always seem to crash the browsers and render the pages useless and unviewable.

Without the killbit, the pages always try to download the latest version of FlashPlayer. Unfortunately, the killbit renders previous versions unuseable.

It seems like a renewal of the late 1990's when Flash was abused by advertisers to a point that most well-intentioned users disabled Flash content to get the information they wanted without the excessive downloads.

Pages that rely on Flash content are again non-viewable in any browser on my machine. I have even removed the Flash content creation programs from my computer until Adobe fixes this problem.

While not all Flash content seems to kill the browsers, those that rely on version 9 do.

I got a reply from my case, but none of the answers were satisfactory, or at least they were things i have already tried:

The Flash9b.ocx error is hard to pin down. as: version issues, security settings with program (Flashplayer) etc. Easiest solution version of the FLashplayer so yor customers version. After that see that Active X controls their IE security settings. Also make sure not running the IE 7 Beta but a full version verison such as IE6. Hope it helps.

I can not reply to this address, so what is the best way to go about escalating this if i would like more help? And what exactly should be the Active X settings? As the applicaiton can work for a long while without getting this crash.

    Many thanks,

I updated to flash 9.0.45.0. We'll see if that changes anything.

One thing I would like to add about the newest fla sh crash I am experiencing is that it has an effect on how certain applications react until my computer is rebooted. For instance, when Flash crashed earlier on me today, it not only interfered with the way that flash applications ran in IE after that, but it also cut out the sound and caused stuttering in the video on Power DVD 6 5.1. I have checked all drivers, services and registry files to try and get a clue about that one, but I show 0x000000 as an error code in the system event log, and all drivers are up to date, all hardware tests good. All services belong to Windows and my resident virus scanner, audio card, and MSN messenger.

Thanks for your help in advance!

And the crash rears its ugly head on me yet again. Fist time I have seen it since the new installation of video card and full reinstall of WinXPPro w/SP2. I have all the crash data in raw text format if anyone over ther at adobe is interested in taking a look at it. It is still selectively crashing IE windows, this time around it got youtube.com, livejournal.com and myspace.com while leaving up the sindows that I was using from nVidia.com, intel.com, alienware.com and this site which I tried to log into before the crash info disappeared. Current installation of flash is 9.0.28.0.

Love some help on this one, guys, Its getting to be past annoying, and its hard to work this way. Granted those particular sites are not all that important, however, last time, it made my job a nightmare.

Going back to the original start of this topic reguarding Flash9b.ocx crashing in IE 7... I see it crash every day. Here is a great way to reproduce it... Log into launch.com. Play a radio station or music video. Now try to rate music by clicking on an album or artist in your music player (radio station or music video). Flash9b.ocx will crash usually in less than 30 minutes. The most annoying part of this error is that IE7 will close and you lose everything you are doing.

    Hi to all.

I had the same problem with the dll flash9b.ocx....just were going to became crazy. Tryied everything was possible.
Now reading replays here I tried to replace that damned thing with a flash8.ocx which I luckily had on my daughter pc....
I just renamed the old dll to flash9bold.ocx ( but i think you can choose what you want), put in the macromed/flash folder the flash8.ocx, named it as flash9b.ocx and IT WORKS!

I had really big problems to enter in www.stickcam.com, sometimes problems with flash games, and flv in youtube too.

Now I have sent this dll to my server so I DON'T MISS IT!!!

Have you made sure your crash is not being caused by a screen saver?

Have you contacted Technical Support for assistance? www.adobe.com/support/contact
