Flash9b.ocx crash once again

Hi, all

I'd really like to see an official message from Adobe concerning the issue with Flash9b.ocx crashing in IE. Surely they must have received a lot of messages from disgruntled users.

I work for an online newspaper and we have several hundred thousand page impressions every day. And for lots of users our front page causes the Flash player to crash. It's practically impossible to isolate which banner ad(s) that will lead to a crash.

My theory is that there are certain ActionScript commands that are handled in a different manner in the new player, while swfs that contain only animation will work.

It appears that some screen savers (electric sheep is one) or programs look for a "flash.ocx" instead of "flash9b.ocx" and this causes the problem.

    SOLUTION:

    Copy: "...windows/system32/macromed/flash/flash9b.ocx"
Paste: it as a copy of flash9b.ocx then...
RENAME: the COPIED FILE to "flash.ocx"
IMPORTANT: do not delete the original flash9b.ocx just make a copy of named "flash.ocx"

This "fix" has worked a lot of people that have programs or screen savers that look for the original flash.ocx file which it can't fine causing in some cases for I.E. to close and the resultant error message.

When the origin and the mechanism of the crash known this is a very simple idea. I'll try it and hope it shall fix the problem.

But I don't understand this: This error occurs allready since end of January or begin of february 2006 on my computer, visiting a lot of sites. I spent allready very much of time trying to solve followed problems. I wrote allready an email to Adobe support and got not any perheaps only formal politeness answer, not to mention any suggestion of trying to fix it. I don't know what does this strategy of Adobe mean :/

I think mine is finally fixed. I tried going back to version 8 but kept getting a message that flash.ocx could not be found when it was time for my screensaver to come on. Today I changed screensavers and the desktop picture, and it seems to be working with version 8. I'm staying away from version 9 for as long as I possibly can.

I *finally* fixed mine, but it took a video card swap to do it. I am still wondering if it has to do with drivers for certain video cards, because ever since I switched from an ATI Radeon X600 to an nVidia geForce 6600 (all PCI-e) I haven't gotten the crash. I have had all the pages running that used to crash my system since I switched the card.

*shrug* Food for thought. I know its not feasible for people to change their video cards to suit Flash player, but this is my discovery on my personal machine.

I'm glad to see it's not just my machine! I just installed the new version the other day and keep getting an error message that flash.ocx cannot be found. Frustrating.

When I get home from work tonight I'll try going back to version 8 and see if that works.

I have the problem with flash 7, 8 and 9, tried them all. I now know that the problem in my case is related to my Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE but I'm positive that Adobe should fix something in flash player because this is getting crazy!

I always have the same error message, which bumps me off the internet...flash9b.ocx.
So far I have not seen any fix for this listed. I constantly uninstall and then install this lousy program.
How can I just go back to the previous version 8? Im sure it works still....Can I get the previous version download somehere ?

To install Flash Player 8, follow the instructions on these pages:

    Uninstalling: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_14157
Installation of Flash Player 8: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_14266

Read the readme.txt in the latter to find the right version for your browser and OS.

I was having problems with IE7 crashing when trying to run Flash Player in certain sites. After much uninstalling, reinstalling, googling, etc. over a long period of time, I found that I, in fact, was the culprit. I had installed Comodo's VerificationEngine program and it was limiting the sites when I tried to run them. After uninstalling that program, I have had no problems with IE7 crashes due to Flash Player sites. If you are having problems, you might want to check your installed programs to determine if one or more of them are not compatible. Sometimes, we create our own problems and don't even realize it. Hope this might help at least just one person. Good luck to all.
