Flex 4 and BiDi Components

Hi,

just wanted to ask if the Flex 4 components will be BiDi-aware so that a developer can set a property on a component or the application to make it render from right to left. For example a DataGrid, when set to RTL (i.e. by setting its "direction" property to "rtl") will start the columns from the right. Another example are horizontal layouts which would lay components from right to left when the application (global) direction is set to RTL.

Bye,
Haykel

Jai,

Do you know of any BiDi components for Flex 3?

I am looking into extending Form and FormItem to handle BiDi automagically, but did not know if anyone out there had already done this.

Gordon,

Do we have any clarity on mirroring functionality in the components. Do you guys plan to start work on it?

Thanks,

Jai

Guys,

Obviously I have a vested interest in your and Flex 4's success on many levels. BiDi and mirroring are just one area of concern for me.

As always, feel free to reach out to me for anything.

Gordon,

I did test the new text engine in this demo app:

http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/demos/

and I couldn't input any Arabic text. I'm using windows XP with Firefox.

I'm interested in helping in BIDI support in the new SDK.

I'm very interested and I'm already heavily testing this functionality in Flex 4 as I'm working on a project that needs Arabic support and I'm using Gumbo for it. I'm also already reporting bugs and if can do more, just tell me Gordon, it's very important for me to get solid bidi support in Flash/Flex!

In
the interest of honesty... Flash Player 10 has some known issues -- and
probably some undiscovered ones -- related to bidi support that could not be
fixed in time for the release. For example, I don't think you can input either
Arabic or Hebrew on the Mac. (Ouch!) Plans to address these shortcomings so
that bidi is a solid feature are under discussion. If you have a particular
interest in bidi and are interested in giving us feedback during Flex 4
development, let me know.

Thanks, guys, for making all this clear to us.

To recap: BiDi text is a feature built into Flash Player 10 and exists today. A
SDK component mirrored layout for right to left languages is in the works for
the Flex 4 SDK, but the team has not written the specification for it yet as
progress has not reached that part of the schedule.

As each day passes I am more excited to see Flex 4. And I look forward to
seeing you guys at MAX.

I am not seeing it in my thread. Is that from the Bug Base?

In my understanding the situation looks like the following:   BiDi text
will be implemented in Flash 10/Flex 4 (It's already on SVN)

BiDi components/layouts will "hopefully" be implemented through
UI "mirroring"

Gordon said:

---

We hope to implement UI "mirroring" to get RTL layout in all
components. (For example, in a Tree the disclosure triangles would be on the
right, and the vertical scrollbar on the left. In an HBox the first child would
be on the right and the last on the left. Etc.) But that work hasn't started
yet.

---

In the other hand, it's relatively easy now with the new layout & skinning
engines of Flex 4 to implement such components.

I think BiDi support is on the way, it's just a matter of time (not so much
hopefully).

I thought it was in this forum but it might have been in flexcoders. The Gumbo public preso also mentioned BiDi and mirroring.<br /><br />Matt<br /><br /><br />On 9/9/08 1:30 PM, "Leif Wells Atlanta" <member@adobeforums.com> wrote:<br /><br />A new message was posted by Leif Wells Atlanta in<br /><br />Developers --<br /> Flex 4 and BiDi Components<br /><br />Haykel, I am sorry to ask but where did you get that "Gordon said:" quote from?<br />I am not seeing it in my thread. Is that from the Bug Base?<br />If this is true and there are plans around this that I have not seen, then great! I am excited!<br />Leif<br /><br />On Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 1:02 PM, Haykel Ben Jemia <member@adobeforums.com> wrote:<br />A new message was posted by Haykel Ben Jemia in<br /><br />Developers --<br /> Flex 4 and BiDi Components<br /><br />In my understanding the situation looks like the following: BiDi text will be implemented in Flash 10/Flex 4 (It's already on SVN)<br /> BiDi components/layouts will "hopefully" be implemented through UI "mirroring"<br /><br />Gordon said:<br />---<br />We hope to implement UI "mirroring" to get RTL layout in all components. (For example, in a Tree the disclosure triangles would be on the right, and the vertical scrollbar on the left. In an HBox the first child would be on the right and the last on the left. Etc.) But that work hasn't started yet.<br />---<br /><br />In the other hand, it's relatively easy now with the new layout & skinning engines of Flex 4 to implement such components.<br /><br />I think BiDi support is on the way, it's just a matter of time (not so much hopefully).<br /><br />Haykel<br /><br />________________________________<br />View/reply at Flex 4 and BiDi Components <a href=http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?13@@.59b63e11/5><br />Replies by email are OK.<br />Use the unsubscribe <a href=http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?280@@.59b63e11!folder=.3c060fa3> form to cancel your email subscription.<br /><br />________________________________<br />View/reply at Flex 4 and BiDi Components <a href=http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?13@@.59b63e11/6><br />Replies by email are OK.<br />Use the unsubscribe <a href=http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?280@@.59b63e11!folder=.3c060fa3> form to cancel your email subscription.
