Question

svn diff in submission emails?

I'd like to see "svn diff" used within the submission emails. Even if
it cuts off after a certain number of lines, seeing the code that's
being submitted would be very useful to get a better idea of what's
going on. I also think it'd help newcomers learn bits and pieces of
the code. -Brian

Hi Jason,

I guess I'm a glutton for punishment. :) Actually, I just put all of
the commits in a folder and when I'm looking for something, read over
the ones that look interesting. Of course I can go look at the diff
through svn, but I could also go read all the recent changes there.
It's a matter of ease and having it right in front of everyone.

To me, the commits are a great way for more people to get involved
with the project, to start learning the code and making it more open.
I've certainly learned about new projects through diffs. And if it's
too much noise, you can always read the Build Meister messages
instead.

-Brian

On Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 12:29 PM, Jason Stafford <member@adobeforums.com> wrote:
> A new message was posted by Jason Stafford in
>
> Developers --
> svn diff in submission emails?
>
> OK,
>
> I'm an idiot - the build notes that Build Meister makes are the same as the
> check in logs that Brian Deitte is already seeing in the emails.
>
> I guess I couldn't wrap my brain around someone wanting MORE info - I like
> the RSS feed of the wiki because I get LESS information - just once a day in
> my RSS reader, a nice easy to skim and digest a taste of the changes.
>
> I can't imagine the volume of traffic the diffs themselves would generate
> being instructive or intelligible to anyone - diffs are hard enough to read
> if you're already well versed in the code, but without that background
> they're just noise.
>
> If you're really curious, I say go straight to the code and use existing
> tools to compare differences between versions - I personally use Subclipse,
> but I know there are also many stand alone tools which will do the job well.
>
> Sorry for the continued noise on this thread, but I wanted to apologize for
> my confusion, and cast my vote for not trying to show diffs.
>
> -Jason
>
> Jason Stafford wrote:
>>
>> A new message was posted by Jason Stafford in
>>
>> Developers --
>> svn diff in submission emails?
>>
>> I know that the feed I provided is for the wiki, but almost every day
>> there's a new update to the wiki with the check in logs. OK,

I'm an idiot - the build notes that Build Meister makes are the same as
the check in logs that Brian Deitte is already seeing in the emails.

I guess I couldn't wrap my brain around someone wanting MORE info - I
like the RSS feed of the wiki because I get LESS information - just once
a day in my RSS reader, a nice easy to skim and digest a taste of the
changes.

I can't imagine the volume of traffic the diffs themselves would
generate being instructive or intelligible to anyone - diffs are hard
enough to read if you're already well versed in the code, but without
that background they're just noise.

If you're really curious, I say go straight to the code and use existing
tools to compare differences between versions - I personally use
Subclipse, but I know there are also many stand alone tools which will
do the job well.

Sorry for the continued noise on this thread, but I wanted to apologize
for my confusion, and cast my vote for not trying to show diffs.

-Jason

Jason Stafford wrote:
> A new message was posted by Jason Stafford in
>
> Developers --
> svn diff in submission emails?
>
> I know that the feed I provided is for the wiki, but almost every day
> there's a new update to the wiki with the check in logs. Oh, that's true, you're right. We do produce a changes file for every nightly build that is a rollup of the checkins from that day. Hi Jason,

This feed refers to the wiki edits (it's linked now from our right-nav) but Brian is referring to the commit logs for our code checkins.

I don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for, but I subscribe to the RSS feed at:

http://opensource.adobe.com/wiki/spaces/createrssfeed.action?types=page&spaces=flexsdk&maxResults=15&title=Flex+Open+Source+Wiki+Pages&publicFeed=true

And it gives me a useful level a detail about what is happening, without being too much to manage.

You might give it a try.

(I'm not sure who gave me this URL - maybe someone else out there knows - I couldn't find it in google)

We looked into this before and couldn't get it to format in a way we were happy with (and the sizes were quite big). But we can look into this again at some point (folks are pretty tied up until MAX).

I'd like to see "svn diff" used within the submission emails. Even if

it cuts off after a certain number of lines, seeing the code that's

being submitted would be very useful to get a better idea of what's

going on. I also think it'd help newcomers learn bits and pieces of

the code. -Brian
