Question

About multiple cross-ref markers at source

Hi everyone,

I'm assigned to find out duplicate cross-ref markers at the sources. This is not possbile if you use FrameMaker to make x-refes, but some old script in our system do insert the marker each time it creates x-ref to the same source, so there are multiple markers at the sources. I dont't know how to find this out manually using FrameMaker. Has anyone come across such cases?

Thank you for any help.

Does a MIF wash clear out the dupes?

I would expect it to (or force them to be unique).

Click in the text somewhere prior to where the first duplicate is suspected.

Bring up the Marker Dialog: Special > Marker

    Edit > Find/Change > Marker of Type: [Cross-Ref]

    [ Find ]

then [ Find ] again, and delete if duplicate.

You can also search by Marker Text if you know what it is.

    _______

MIF wash is a menu option in some FM releases, otherwise:

    in your myfile.fm, Save-As

    (*) MIF {latest version available}

    to: myfile.mif

    Close myfile.fm

    Open myfile.mif

Save-As to myfile.fm in normal Framemaker binary format.

Thank you so much! Although I don't know what MIF wash is and how to use it (will google it later), I did find some duplicate markers  through

Edit > Find/Change > Marker of Type: [Cross-Ref], for when I click through some become stagnant for a while before it continues to find the next marker.

Now, when I use the step to check the suspected markers using:

Click in the text somewhere prior to where the first duplicate is suspected.

Bring up the Marker Dialog: Special > Marker

how come I only see one entry of marker text in the pane? Also, is there a way to find duplciate marker  visually, is it thicker than single marker? In my document, it looks the same as the single marker.

    Thank  you for responding again.

    > ... how come I only see one entry of marker text in the pane?

It only finds one at a time.

    > Also, is there a way to find duplciate marker  visually ...

Only by inserting some text, such as:

    1. At first find, hit left arrow
    2. Type X right-arrow X right-arrow X right-arrow until no more marker anchors appear
    3. Delete the dupes, and the X's
