Question

Acquiring missing fonts ...

Hello,

I’ve had the privilege of trading in one laptop for another. This has meant a new version of FrameMaker.

When I open some old files, however, I get a ton of messages about  unavailable fonts.

For example:

“The ‘Agaramond-Regular’ Font is unavailable.
‘Times New Roman’ will be used in this session.”

Where / how can I get the Adobe fonts I need?

I'm using FrameMaker 2019.

Kind regards,

Fred Gerke

Additionally, if you are using Adobe CC applications, you have access to the Adobe type library. You can download the fonts directly from Adobe. (The A in Agaramond lets you know this is the Adobe Garamond version of the popular Garamond family.)

*Additionally, I recall that the Agaramond family was part of the ATM (Adobe Type Manager) package that used to install with early versions of FrameMaker. Those fonts installed automatically with Fm 7 and earlier. If you can track down the installation media (floppies?!) you'd likely find the exact fonts needed in that message.

They'll likely be legacy code sets, however, and not Unicode.
With any sufficiently old .fm document, a full review of fonts is in order.

Consider whether you need the original fonts.

Sometimes the replacement fonts are as good as or even better than the originals.

Do you have access to the old laptop? Then copy these font files from c:\Windows\Fonts\. Go to your new laptop and open the folder and right-click the font files and select Install (or something like this).

    Thanks Winfried -

Is there anything I need to look out for here if I follow this path?

Perhaps I've been in the business too long, but it sounds too easy.

    Make a backup first.
