Is there a way to prevent FrameMaker from turning certain URLs into links automatically when creating the PDF? As when showing sample URLs that aren't real? In general we want FrameMaker to do this, and it does, but in cases like the one I describe we don't want that done.

The only way to do this would be NOT to add a link to the actual URL. Just add the URL as text without adding a reference to it.

Actually, we usually don't add a hypertext marker at all in FrameMaker (is that what you're talking about when oyu say adding a link?), but when the PDF is made the URLs are discovered and linked.

Can FrameMaker automatically check that the URL links are still valid upon PDF creation?

The short answer is "No." If a URL is invalid in the FM file, it will be invalid once the PDF is created.
