Is anyone getting a 9004 error doing anything in FM9? If so please tell me what you are doing to get the error and what patch you are at and what version of Acrobat you have. Also be very clear on what you are doing to get that error step by step will be great. Trying to find fixes for people and nothing is working and no one is saying anything about it!!!

Thank you from a very tried tech support person.

This may not help anyone, but in my case, the crash was being caused by a "hidden" graphic on a master page. Frame would give me the standard "some images cannot be displayed" message, but since there were no gray boxes, I assumed it was a false error. Turns out that the master page had originally been linked to a missing logo that was pasted over with a valid image file. Even if it looks like there are no missing images, it's worth it to double-check.

Another workaround that succeeds, most of the time, is to only print the book after opening all of the constituent fm files. Don't know why, and maybe it's coincidental rather than causal, but when the Lingusitics dictionary and image file fixes don't fix anything, the Open all files ib book command before printing is worth a shot.

While I must get some time to try all the suggested solutions, I'm getting the following error several times a day:

    9004, 6921628, 9677518, 0

I cannot find a pattern triggering it. I remember having had this kind of problem earlier, on a work I did starting from scratch. Now, I'm reusing material created on FM 6.0 Mac, and the crash is my best friend hour after hour.

I'll get back as soon as I have some more info. Unfortunately, I don't know how to send the crash log to Adobe (the bug report form only allows for 2000 characters, and no attachment is allowed).

The error message asks you to e-mail it to them at the address they specify. Don't send it through the bug reporting system.

Yes, I am receiving Error 9004, began yesterday.  I am on Framemaker 9.03, just installed and downloaded the patch a few days ago.  I am running on a Vista OS. Version of Acrobat is 9 Pro.

Yesterday, I had approximately 9 files open and first received the error when going from one document to another.  I was changing fonts (Framemaker substitutes the wrong fonts), editing the document, and updating the cross references in each document.

I then closed all the documents except the one I was updating, thinking that it crashed because I had too much open.  It was working great until Framemaker needed to open a different document to update the cross reference, this document also had font changes made, then I received the error again.

This morning, I received the error again, when using WebWorks ePublisher Pro 2009, trying to general OLH.

The error states that a file was generated and to send that in, the problem I had and the main reason I have not yet reporting this error is because the error refers to a file that was generated but the location given doesn't exist.  I attempted to search my entire computer for this 'generated file' and was not successful at finding it.

    Hope this helps

It's probably referring to a path like this:

    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Adobe\FrameMaker\9

    right?

It's a normally hidden folder - in XP's Windows Explorer, change your Tools > Folder Options > View tab to Show hidden files and folders.

I am still receiving the 9004, 5230272, 8818444, 8821587 error, I have sent the log into support.  I am at a halt as to generating my help files because I cannot get past this error.

If there is anything you can suggest to get this up and running I would greatly appreciate it.

I used to be on FM 7.2. I recently installed the Technical Communication Suite 2 after uninstalling my previous versions of Robohelp, Acrobat, FrameMaker etc. Since then, the "FM 9 Error 9004, 6920492, 9676798, 0" error has cropped up at least 4 times when working with FM 9.

    Here are some details:

    • Before installing the TCS 2, deleted every old FM file from C:\Documents and Settings\[User]\Application Data\Adobe\FrameMaker
    • Am on Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 3, 32-bit, 2 GB RAM
    • Work with unstructured FrameMaker
    • Have installed update 3 (FM 9.0p250, despite which I get this error)
    • Work locally on my files and not on a network
    • Am working on an FM book with 2000 pages, but had this same problem on other FM books with far fewer pages
    • The FM books have about 1000 images (PNGs and GIFs)
    • Get the error anywhere in the book; while working with the ToC, the title page, a 'standard' page
    • Get the error after changing my application release number variable, when copying text into it from Notepad, when simply opening a file. In short, no particular action seems to trigger this error.
    • Have Adobe PDF as my default printer, but get this error when trying to print to file too
    • Did not edit maker.ini
    • All my language dictionaries are available. Have a \Linguistics folder in my personal Document and Settings \Application Data\Adobe folder.
    • Have not added any personal or site directories

I notice that your original  post is a month old. Has anyone found the answer to this problem by now?

    Thanks,

    Mala

    Mala,

From my own experience and from other users’ reports I strongly recommend the following steps, if you work with files that come from older FrameMaker versions:

    • Recreate your book files
    • Recreate all »generated files«, like TOC, IX etc. Delete them on disk and using the Add menu create new files (just look up the settings of the old documents before throwing them away).

This has helped me and others to avoid crashes.

I guess the reason behind this are the new features of the FrameMaker book, which partly apply to generated documents as well.

I am getting 9004 crashes on a pretty constant basis now, whether I am editing my book files or other individual documents. It always seems to happen when I have more than one document open, and I tab over from one document to the other. The dominant error is 9004,7885529,5204862,5204599, although I have also gotten 9004,6920492,9676798,0.

I deleted my .book file and rebuilt it, deleted the TOC file, gutted and replaced anchored frames, nothing seems to help. I desperately need a solution to this problem as I can barely work on my book any more.

I get this "Internal Error: 9004, 6920492, 9676798, 0" whenever - and only when - I quit FrameMaker. Everytime - when closing FM direct after opening as well as when closing FM after hours of otherwise successful work. The "Recent Items" list won't update.

It's FrameMaker 9.0.2 (or 9.0p237) on Windows XP --- interestingly, the (personal) maker.ini says "Version=9.0p196".

Btw, renaming the "Linguistics" folder had no effect...

Do you have the old cudspan plugins installed? The cudlog.dll program caused

the same problem for me with FM9 (though I don't recall if your error number

is the same as mine was). Removing cudlog.dll made all well again. I haven't

noticed conflicts with any of the other cudspan plugins, though I doubt I've

used them all to actually test.

I believe that Chris Despopoulos has said that he was working on FM9 updates

    for his plugins.

Alas, no, I haven't any plugins installed so far ...

Maybe I should add that my FrameMaker is part of the Technical Communication Suite.

Vikingweb and arcasys or anyone else who experienced this problem,

Did you find any solution for your crash problems?

I can no longer open FrameMaker 9.0 (installed with all current patches) and get the same error at startup:

    9004, 6919244, 9675646, 0

The problem came out of the blue when I tried to open FrameMaker 9.0m, which had functioned well for several weeks.

Any pointers would be very welcome because Adobe support just gives me generic troubleshooting stuff and I'm stuck.

    Thanks!

When you start FM, do you see the FM logo window with the display of the components being loaded? Does the crash occur at a specific component?

Have any system patches, new softwarem etc. been installed since you last used FM?

    Arnis,

Yes, exactly, when I try to start FM 9, the FM logo displays, the Fonts load, and then during the Localization process, the crash occurs.

The only software updates that were pushed  by Microsoft since I last used FM 9 without problems were Windows Defender updates. I'm running XP Pro. I've restarted my laptop with Windows Defender disabled, but the crash still occurs. (I have not yet tried to uninstall Windows Defender.)

Hope to find an answer soon ...

I think the error I'm seeing is related to Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended latest update to release 9.1.1.  Yesterday this update was installed.

Today I uninstalled FM and Acrobat from the computer

Removed all folders and files found in:

    C:\Documents and Settings\[User]\Application Data\Adobe\FrameMaker

    C:\Documents and Settings\[User]\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat

    C:\Documents and Settings\[User]\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat

Reinstalled FM and Acrobat from CD, not errors.

Updated FM to 9.0p237, no errors.

Updated Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended to latest update 9.1.1, errors.

    *****

    UPDATE

To confirm it's relase 9.1.1, I unistalled Acrobat only and deleted any folders / files as outlined above, then reinstalled Acrobat 9.0 from CD, no errors.

sdq, that's good detective work -- I haven't yet updated my Acrobat, although from what I read on the security blogs the update is VERY, VERY important, there are lots of reports the last couple of days on malware taking advantage of unpatched versions, particularly when opening PDFs and using Flash in Internet Explorer.

Been getting the 9004 error on various occasions. Windows XP Pro, FrameMaker 9.0p237

    Error seems the same. 9004, 6920492, 9676798, 0

    1. Deleting more than one user variable in the Variables pod. In the specific case that causes the error, there are 3 custom user variables, the first and third user variables are being deleted. Deleting the first user variable works fine, then deleting the third variable will cause the error. I tried other combinations/orders of deleting user variables, result is deleting more than one causes the error to occur.

Error does not happen if after the first variable is deleted - the variables pod is closed, clicking anywhere in the document, and then reopen the variables pod to delete the next variable. Using the refresh button in the variables pod generates the same error.

    2. After working in FrameMaker for a while and depending how large the document is, the Pods and Panels don't refresh or function, if FrameMaker is not restarted, it will generate the same error.

    3. When updating text insets of a FrameMaker document when running a frame script that worked previously with FrameMaker 7.2. Happens on the Update TextInset command, not sure if I'm running into an issue with FrameMaker or something needs to change in my FrameScript.

Yes, I'm now getting 9004, 6920492, 9676798, 0 error when I try to save as a pdf.  I'm using the structure Chapter.fm template, creating a new FrontMatter, Index or TOC do not create the error.  Could I have a corrupted structure Chapter.fm template?

arc and sdg, what printer do you have set as your system default when you do the Save As step?

    Participant

The computer's default printer, that I can print the document to, is a Dell Laser Printer 1700n.  I have deleted the structure Chapter.fm document and reinstalled FM, after removing the 2 patches, to reinstall a fresh version of the structure Chapter.fm file.  So now starting with a new Chapter.fm, it still error out when trying to Save As PDF ..., but only on the Chapter.fm document.

I have to fix my past post on the number error I am getting my mistake this is the number I am getting 9004, 6919244, 9675646, 0 but now that I know there is another number out that helps. That is what I want to see is numbers.
    May 12, 2009

I'm getting exactly the same error code , 6919244, 9675646, 0 when I try to start Frame 9.0 which has been freshly installed from CD on a Windos XP SP3 system.

    Then I installed the patches 9.0.1 and 9.0.2 and now I'm getting: 9004, 6920492, 9676798, 0.

Any advise would be very much appreciated!
