Assigning master pages to body pages containing paragraph tags

Background:

  • I'm using unstructured FrameMaker v8.0
  • Currently we have a paragraph tag called NotesPage and a reference page called Notes. The NotesPage paragraph tag specifies Notes in the Below Pgf field on the Advanced tab in paragraph designer. When we use the NotesPage paragraph tag, it inserts a full page with lines all the way down the page.
  • There are cases in very large files where we have to use the NotesPage paragraph tag to insert this page throughout the document.
  • The page will always be used on a left-hand page.
  • When we add information to the file, the notes page can be pushed to a right-hand page. So, this requires manual intervention in files that are quite large.

Potential Solution:

  • I am trying to work with the MasterPageMaps reference page.
  • I created a blank master page named NotesPage.
  • On the MasterPageMap, I did this:

Paragraph Tag Name

Right-Handed Master Page (or Single-Sided Master Page)

Left-Handed Master Page

Range Indicator (Single, Span pages, Until changed)

Comments

NotesPage

Right

NotesPage

Single

  • What I want to happen is the ability to insert a NotesPage paragraph tag after each section. If the NotesPage tag falls on a left-handed page, the lined notes page appears. If the NotesPage tag falls on a right-handed page, then my normal master page named Right is used.
  • Unfortunately this isn't working for me. The paragraph tag seems to always trump the Apply Master Pages command. I get the lined notes page no matter what.
  • I tried putting the notes lines, on the NotesPage master page, but of course, it just appears as background text and my next page worth of text displays on top of the lines.

Any help is appreciated. This would save hours at production time.  Thank you!

If the layout that you want for the Notes pages is found on the master page called NotesPage, then you probably don't need anything defined for the NotesPage paratag. It should just be a placeholder, empty, paragraph - no need to access anything from a Reference page..

On your NotesPage master page, create the text frame only high enough to hold just the NotesPage paratag. The rest of the lines and such can then be background material. This will kick any other content over to the next page.

    Arnis,

thanks for your help. We're part way there, but there is one piece I'm still missing.  If the paragraph tag is used on an odd page, I want a regular right page master page to be applied. I don't want the lined notes page to display.  But, unfortunately, I'm still getting it.  (I'm sure it's because my paragraph tag calls that reference page--but I'm not sure how to get the end result without it.

    Thank you
