Can someone clarify how to use <$autorange> on the index reference page?

A brief note on https://www.daube.ch/docu/files/compendium.pdf#page=402 tells that this is used to combine successive index entries into one:

    Topic on page 312

    Topic on page 313

    Topic on page 315

    → Topic on page 312 – 315

I didn't even know that building block existed when I sat down to drink my coffee.

So after playing with it for the first time—and writing this is to help me remember how it works—<$autorange> is used to collapse the entries generated from markers of type Index into page ranges when possible.

If I have an index marker for Hue on pages 2, 3, 4 and 6, this is the default result:

But adding <$autorange> in front of <$pagenum> on the IX reference page:

tells Fm to automatically collapse the entries. No startrange/endrange pairs required.

    Who knew? Thanks, @K.Daube!!

If I understand correctly, isn't a disadvantage of the $autorange facility that you have to create a marker on every page of a contiguous set of pages, compared with defining the start / end in the marker dialog?

IMHO it's an alternative if all the markers already exist (more or less created automatically).
