Question

Bizarre - will not display pdf

I know there are loads of threads on pdf generation, but I think this is a bit different.

I am trying to create a pdf from a book.

I chose File > Save book as pdf

I select all the options, tick the 'display the pdf option' and so on.

It then builds the file which takes about 30 seconds.  And then... nothing.  It doesn't even generate a file.  What is going on?

Save as PDF has always been flaky. It's much better to print to the

    Adobe PDF virtual printer.

But, having said that, I ran into a similar problem, once. It turned out

that I had that I had 33 characters in the filename. Why was this a

    problem? Because in FrameMaker I had File> Preferences> General>

Cross-Platform File Naming set to "Macintosh." When set that way,

FrameMaker allows only 32 characters in the filename, in order to remain

compatible with old Apple computers. (I may be remembering these exact

numbers wrong, but the key point is that I happened to have a mere one

too many allowable characters.) Once, I shortened the filename,

everything proceeded as expected. It was weird that FM let me tick

through something like 4 dialog boxes to get to a point where it failed,

without throwing up any error at all.

So check to see if you have cross-platform compatibility set to

Macintosh and have too many characters, or perhaps illegal characters,

    in the filename.

    Right!

It was Acrobat that was my problem.

I binned it and dl PrimoPDF. Which was free.

    So there you go.

    Thanks for your inspiration.

Well, the simple answer is probably that you're trying to use SaveAs rather than print to the Acrobat logical printer on your system.... So try printing the book instead.

But to get a more detailed answer, it's helpful for other members of the forum to know your OS; your Frame and Acrobat versions, including the patch level; and whether you've set up your system so that the Acrobat printer as the system default (recommended).

    Hi Art,

Thanks for getting back to me.

I have tried both methods, and both do the exact same thing.  They go through all the motions of generating a file, but there is no end product.

    My OS is Windows XP

My Framemaker is version 10 (Trial)

And my Acrobat is version 6.

And you can create a pdf from other apps? How about creating the .ps file & distilling that?
