Question

Book update of markers with ID numbers

(FM12 on Win7)

Doh! I just posted a similar question in the CMS forum, but the answer to it is probably here instead.

Backstory

  • My new manager has asked me to consider SVN with unstructured FM.
  • I wonder how to manage SVN merge conflicts among FM's binary (.fm) files?

As a potential source of SVN-indicated change, when I update a .book, does FM always update every ID number of markers that have them? For example, the numbers in <MText and <XRefSrcText ?

If yes, then presumably every book update would update every file in the book that has such a marker, including every inset that has such a marker, indicating lots of "change" that isn't really change that my authors need to manage.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Not certain of the marker IDs updating, but FM does always update a timestamp for every bit of content that is imported by reference (graphics, text insets) so these change even if you just open and close a file. There were some discussions on the framers list about SVN several years ago and it was not really feasible to do FM binary diffs in SVN.

Try the following Google search string: SVN site:lists.frameusers.com/pipermail/framers

@Arnis,

(This might be OT.)

Well, I tried that link. Google lists numerous results. Every link fails with "unable to connect" from Firefox or "page can't be displayed" from IE.

Obviously those "results" are not a FM problem.

If feasible, I wonder if you have a suggestion for working around that. Maybe frameusers itself is down?

Best regards,
