Question

Can I use DocBook 4.5 DTD with FrameMaker 11?

I am fairly a newbie both at FrameMaker 11 and XML, but have just dived into the deep end with Structured FrameMaker to produce a DocBook document. FrameMaker's DocBook structured applications seem to use the DocBook 4.1 DTD, and my documents are 4.5 (well, they were 5.0, but FrameMaker can't handle that at all, apparently, so I converted them to 4.5). Naturally, I get lots of parsing errors when I open a file. I'll bet most or  all of those errors will go away if I can get FrameMaker to use the 4.5 DTD. Is that possible? How?

Do I download all of the 4.5 files and change some value to point  FrameMaker to them for each 4.5 document? Like I said...newbie.

I am gathering that I could modify the DTD (or EDD? I don't have my head entirely around the relationship yet) to add elements and attributes, but that seems the hard way to go if there is any chance of simply pointing to the 4.5 DTD.

help!

thanks.

Well, since no one is chiming in...

I would make a WAG that you could, assuming you have a valid DTD.

Are you getting errors when you load it up, or you're looking for

information before you leap in?

Hi Art,

First, nice Richard Thompson quote. You could easily have chosen to quote something darker from him, like:

"A man stakes his neighbor's cat to the barbecue and turns on the gas

'Now are you going to talk,' he says 'Or am I going to have to get nasty?'"

...but you chose his sweet side. Dot's nayiz.

Anyway, I get lots of errors loading DocBook 4.5 documents, which I take to be because the docbookx structured app Adobe supplies appears to be use the DocBook 4.1.2 DTD. I am still learning how to build my own structured app from scratch, and it's a heckuva learning curve, I must say. Plus, Adobe's support for DocBook appears less than enthusiastic.

I was wondering if anyone had built a DocBook 4.5 structured app that I might avail myself of, but since I'm finding nothing, I am currently digging in to the Structure Dev Guide and Structure Dev Reference (from FM9!) and trying to figure out how to make one myself.

Any pointers of any sort are appreciated. I'm technically competent, but there's a LOT of specific technical information involved here that I am just now learning.

Thanks for your reply!
