Can't make "Section" and "Subsection" work

I have a book where I need to work with Section/Subsection variables, but I can't make them work. The tabs for Section and Subsection are inactive.

I have added the variable both to master pages and to paragrah styles, but the tabs stay inactive. Volume, Chapter, Page, Footnote work as they should. Is there something here I don't understand or is this a bug?

      Figured it out! Apparently one must use the Folder feature in the book file. If I add a folder and move my document to the folder, that will enable the section variable.

      Everything really is so much easier if you know how to do it 🙂

      Does a document need to be Structured for those to be enabled?

        I don't think so. According to the Help file, I should be able to work with section variables. They are there and I can insert them in the document, but I can't control them from the book files numbering tab. I tried opening a couple of structured documents, but sections does not work there either.
