Can't update book

I have Windows 7, and am trying to update a FM 11 book. When I click the update book icon, the software starts updating but then hangs indefinitely. I have to go to task manager and end the FM task. I have the latest update, 11.0.2. I cannot add an index because that requires the book to be updated. Prior to updating I have verified there are no unresolved cross-references. I am using structured Frame. Any suggestions?

Thank you,

Tani

Edited to add, I don't believe it matters whether I am using structured or unstructured, does it?

OK, if you have all the files open, didn't get any error messages and still

    can't update....

I suspect that at least one of the files is corrupted somehow. First, make

a backup copy of the book.

Then, try saving the .FM file out as .MIF, opening the .MIF and saving it

over the source .FM file. (If you download a trial of MIF2Go from mif2go.com,

they install a utility program that "MIF-washes" all the files in the book

at once -- it's a useful tool.) Saving as MIF should parse the file and

remove any corrupted characters or embedded trash (such as you might have

by pasting in Word content, for example).

After you've processed all the files, try the update yet again.

If that doesn't work, I'd opt for Jeff's suggestion of eliminating

problematic files, one by one until you locate the problem.

    Cheers,

Open all the files in the book and then try the update.

Most likely problem is that you're getting unavailable fonts or broken

cross-ref messages for one or more component files as they're being opened.

Because you're running a background process, there isn't a way to

acknowledge the error message, so the file never opens, so your update

    doesn't complete.

Opening all the files first, before the update, allows you to ack any

error/problem messages. If you are receiving some, pay attention to them

because you should resolve them at some point.

No unavailable font messages and I verified no unresolved cross-refs.

Well, then, time to either toss out each file one by one until it updates OR create a new book and add files one by one, updating as you go, until it crashes.

Try opening all of the component parts of the book first & then update - you may get a message about one of them that's being suppressed in the "silent-open" that FM does when it tries to update a book.

All book files are open, but book still won't update.
