Can you assign a custom Master Page to stay with a page. I'll assign a
Master Page through Format > Page Layout > Master Page Usage but when
pages are added/deleted afterwards, the custom formatting shifts to adjacent
pages. I have to go back and manually adjust the Master Page usage assignments.

I use Frame 12 on Windows 7

re: Can you assign a custom Master Page to stay with a page.

That's the purpose of the UnstructMasterPageMaps table on Reference Page MasterPageMaps.

It doesn't exist by default (unless your template already had it). Create it by:
Format > Page Layout > Apply Master Pages

    (aka AMP)

Once it exists, and the table has been edited to map your custom page layouts to some unique paratag content on such pages, the pages get [re]assigned by either:
Format > Page Layout > Apply Master Pages

    or

    Edit > Update Book*

  • Apply Master Pages

And yes, this implies that you need at least one Paragraph Format that only ever appears on the custom layout. This is commonly done for first pages of chapters and sections, where the normal Heading1 might be the mapping trigger.

    _____

    * Personally, I always do AMP in the document (or book component file, never from the Book menu), before doing any other Update, as content can and does shift off pages.
