Question

Cannot get some installed fonts to embed

I was asked to reformat some documents, using the Avenir font family. I updated the FrameMaker file, thought my work was done, saved it as pdf and sent it to my coworkers. It turns out the pdf had different fonts displayed on Mac and PC, with PC showing the intended fonts, and Mac replacing them. I checked the pdf properties and the log file, and it appears as though some of the Avenir fonts are not able to be embedded.

I've looked everywhere to get this resolved with no luck.

  • I tried reinstalling the fonts, adjusting the Adobe PDF print settings (unchecked "Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts").
  • I tried to Embed all fonts in the Adobe Distiller Settings.I think it's also important to note that I can't find the Avenir fonts anywhere in the Distiller Font Source list, even though they are within the source folders.
  • I tried unchecking "Remember missing Font Names" in the FrameMaker preferences.
  • I tried using the fonts in other programs (Word) and printing to PDF, which worked just fine and embedded the fonts.

But these fonts are still not embedding through FrameMaker/Distiller, and they show up as drastically different for Mac users. What am I doing wrong?

I see that subsetting is enabled, so that's not the problem.

What does the PDF report for Fonts? (File » Properties /Fonts\)

Where was the font obtained from?
    What was the license?
It appears that Linotype has separate terms for Desktop and Electronic Document use.

The affected fonts are not embedded, and it finds a "replacement" font, but uses the same font.

The fonts were sent to me from elsewhere in the company, I don't know where they originally obtained the font. I have to admit, I'm not very familiar with licensing fonts, and I thought if it said the font properties said Installable that it would work as intended.

I've never run into this, so am just poking in the dark as you are.

    What version of FM?
How rendering to PDF? (Publish, Save-as-PDF, Print-to-PDF, Print-to-Ps&Distill)
You might try downloading the Avenir instances yourself and seeing if the behavior changes.

re: …if it said the font properties said Installable…
    Embeddable might be the key.
