Cant create headers and footers/variables!!!

I'm using FrameMaker (structured) 8 on a Windows operating system. This is my first time using FrameMaker. I can't figure out how to create headers and footers in the master pages. I've been reading the Help Guide but I can only find information on how to insert variables, page numbers, etc. but nothing on how to make a header/footer in the first place! Help would be very much appreciated!

Kass,

The headers/footers are created using the variables and text that you
enter. By default, the Left/Right master pages should have a header
and footer text frame defined. If they have been removed from your
template for some reason, then you can simply use the text frame tool
to insert new ones (they are called background text frames on the
master pages).
