Question

Change default graphic import to "Copy into Doc?"

We are using FrameMaker 10 in a Windows 7 environment.

We use File > Import > File to bring graphics into our FrameMaker files.

Apparently, when you import graphics like that, the default setting in FrameMaker is "Import By Reference."

This default setting has created hours of rework for us, because we do not use linked graphics, and we do not automatically think of linked graphics when we import several graphics into FrameMaker files.  So, when someone else attempts to open the FrameMaker file, we see the error message that User A's FrameMaker cannot find the graphic that is on User B's hard drive.

So, we have to stop work, and then have User B go into all of the graphics and manually change them to "Copy Into Document."

This has happened many times.

Is there some way to make the default setting for importing graphics: "Copy Into Document"?

Thank you!

Tim

NO there is no way to do it,the way we designed it that way because copy into the document increases the size of the project.

However if the first time when you import the file and you select copy into document, from the next time onwards,it would stay the same.

Thank you for the response Harpreet.

The setting stays the same until you close FrameMaker.  When you open FrameMaker again, you have to think to reset the capture method to "Copy Into Document," because it reverts back to the default setting every time you close/open FrameMaker.

There may be a maker.ini hack that could set it for you, but I don't know of any off the top of my head. You may want to check Klaus Daube's posts on the Framers list to check out his exhaustive research on all the maker.ini entries he could accumulate.

The reason it's not designed that way is because "by reference" is the industry best practice - add your voice to a wishlist if you want to have your feature added - https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
