Question

Change the dictionary to correspond to the language I am typing

I am working for a Translation and PAO agency, which means that we are publishing quite a lot of different languages.

How can I make sure that the defined dictionary is the one corresponding to the language I am typing some additional text?

How can I make correspond the keyboard dictionary to the language I am publishing?

Thanks for your help

To change the language document-wide, click the mouse sprite in the margin, so that no paragraph or character formats are currently selected.

    Format > Paragraph > Designer

    [ Default Font ]

The dialog fields should be all blank or "As-Is"

    Language: [ Dansk ]

    [ Update All ]

    <*> Default Font Properties Only

<*> All Paragraphs and Catalog Entries

    [ Update ]

    Format > Character > Designer

The dialog fields should be all blank or "As-Is"

    Language: [ Dansk ]

    [ Update All ]

<*> All Characters and Catalog Entries

    [ Update ]

This is for FM7.1. I don't know if later versions have an easier way to do this, or do it book-wide.

To do this book-wide, apply the process described by Error (to set all of the character and paragraph tags to Danish) to your template(s) and re-import the format to your book files via the book.

The problem is that as soon as I am typing any additional keyboard character, defined dictionary is turning to English U.S. again. So I have got to select the paragraph problem part, got to the Character Designer again, and change to Dictionary again. I do not know which Setting I have got to change (either FMK settings or PC Control Panel settings) to avoid this.

As explained earlier, what I would like to find is a preventive solution rather than a corrective one :-s

Just make sure the language property for your new text is correct: go to the language panel on the paragraph designer tab.

If you're using a style from the original document, I'd hope the language setting would be correct to start with :-} otherwise, you might consider defining your own style for newContent to highlight text you've added.

    Hi Niels,

The language property is correctly set.

The problem is that when I am typing a non-breaking space (for example), or any other character, it automatically turns back to English. How can I do to stay with my Danish dictionary?

I've never seen this behaviour! and hope someone more knowledgeable will help.

I have checked, though, and been reminded that character styles can set language too – not just paragraph styles. Try selecting a problem paragraph (o,h,p if you're a keyboard person like me) and then re-applying default formatting at paragraph level: F8, d for Default ¶ Font

In case it helps solve the problem, which version of FM are you using? how are you entering the non-breaking space? and when you say other character, do you mean ordinary visible-on-the-keyboard characters or Alt+ / File > Utilities > Character palette specials?
