Question

Changing default Frame template

I'd like to change Frame's default behaviour when I

File > New > Document > Portrait

Now the document it produces does not have smart spaces turned on and I would like to change that.

In Frame help, it says

Change templates for blank paper and text files

My system has choices Portrait, Landscape and Custom. None is called "blank paper" or "text". So, what do I choose?

The online help also says

Note:  You can change the filename that FrameMaker looks for when it creates a blank paper document or opens a text file.

It does not say where to do that.

Thanks for any clarity you can create.

Hopefully, someone else will confirm this. I believe that

fminit\shellnew.fm is the file used as the basis for a new document and

fminit\custom is the file to change for the default settings for

choosing the Custom button in the new file dialog. (The latter has no

.fm extension, but you can load it into FM by right-clicking and

choosing FrameMaker as the program to load it.) Load the file(s) into

FrameMaker, make your changes and save them. There is also a

fminit\txttmplt file, but I'm not sure what it does that is different.

Also, maker.ini has the following settings in the section that

could be changed to point to a different file, instead of editing the

default files above:

CustomDoc=fminit\custom

AsciiTemplate=fminit\txttmplt

Probably the maker.ini in your user profile – change or add a section for

OpenDirOnStart=path
