Changing heading defn reassigns master pages

I changed the definition for the Heading 3 tag (so that list numbering would not restart at each heading). Then I saw that almost all the pages in my document had been assigned to a different master page. Thinking this was just a glitch, I went through and corrected all these assignment, only to discover that the corrected assignments had been lost and the pages were still wrong. The reference page that assigns master pages to paragraph tags has no line for Heading 3, and I don't see an option in the Paragraph Designer that governs this. Any idea why the change to the paragraph tag affected the master page assignment?

Do you have anything defined for Heading3 in your Master Page mapping table (on the Reference pages) and is it set to run when you update your book/files?

No, heading 3 is not included in the table, and this is appropriate because it should not affect which master page is in use. Only Heading 1 has its own assignment.
