Chapter Numbers Not Appearing Correctly in TOC

Hello
I am working in FrameMaker 2019 and just added a section to a chapter in a book. Now I am trying to update the TOC to reflect this change.  Prior to this change the TOC worked fine but with this addition something in the settings sseemed to change and the numbering is off.  I have not altered anything in the building blocks to cause this.  I am confused to what settings change and why so easily on re-generating.

I have tried resetting the numbering to "Continue" and reupdated the book but it did not work. I have included a screen shot.  Note there are 14 chapters but I only took a shot of the first page to show what is going on.
I would appreciate your help in figuring out what might be going on and steps to resolve.
Thanks so much.
Anne

Since the current answers assume some level of FM knowledge here are my notes

    • the upgrade to FrameMaker failed to fix the Paragraph meta data for the Header chapter information for the automatic chapter number to work. So, this needs to be updated at some point
      1. Select the main header text and open the paragraph designer (Ctrl+M) or (Format > Paragraph > Paragraph designer …) and go to the numbering TAB
        1.       The format will be H:Chapter < >< =0><n+>< =0> : this needs to be changed to H:Chapter <$chapnum> :
        2.       Click Update Style and then Apply
        3. Repeat this for each of the header styles that contain the chapter number e.g.
        4.   Header 2 becomes H:< ><$chapnum>.<n+>< =0>< =0>\t
        5. Header 3 is H:< ><$chapnum>.<n>.<n+>\t

I’m not sure if the < =0>  ‘s in header 2 are required

Ok, that's to do with the building blocks on the Reference page for those TOC element headers - your chapter numbers are probably incrementing just fine (when set to continue after previous file) you just haven't got them turned on to see them.

Oh. How do resolve this and why, when it worked fine before, does it change? I have this issue everytime with this manual. Where do I look to resolve this? And what is even causing this if I have not changed element headers? Thanks.

I fixed it. I think it was one toggle of the Numbering that I thought I had done. Thank you for pointing things out to rethink.

Ah, so you mean you are talking about something like
    Chapter 1 - Safety ------ pg xx

Chapter 2 - Overview ----pg zz

    This sort of thing?

    Right - 14 chapters.

This is what is currently in play.  All chapters show 1 as the chapter number vs 1, 2, 3, etc.   Does this issue still look at page numbers for resolution?

You weren't?? The TOC is all about page numbering - if this last screenshot is the second file in the book, then the page number issue is right there - you've told it to start again at page #1, not "continue from last".

It is actually the fourth file if you count the Front Page, TOC, and LoF.

I was more thinking of the Chapter numbers not showing right. I was not concerned initially about the page numbers but I see  now how this is problematic.

I don't spend tons of time in this product as my more active project is in another product so some of these things you are pointing out are not things I have considered or come across often or at all. Thanks for showing me this types of things to consider. Will give this a try.

Umm, aren't you concerned with Page numbering? What's the setting for that??

I was not but perhaps need to be. It was not really causing the issue. Here is the screenshot nonetheless. Thanks.

Your first screenshot seemed to imply that the "System Overview" file was where it started misbehaving, right? What's the numbering properties of that .fm file?

I see. So the first file after the LoF is Safety (Chapter 1). Here are screenshots from this dialogue:

Hope this is more helpful.  Chapter 2 is System Overview.

    Thanks

Take a screenshot of the book with the offending file selected - then right-click on it to see what the Numbering is set to.

That is the problem - I am not sure which of these files at this point is the offender.  I have looked multiple times and compared it to the files that DO work in another book. Things seem to match up and it does not work.

The TOC is currently the issue in terms of numbering being wrong. So you are saying that I should take pictures of each of the dialogues of the TOC numbering to see which is problematic?

Ok, let's see the book layout

I am sorry - what does that mean exactly? I have never been asked this before.

How do I show it here?

That's not th enumbering properties of the book - that's the error console - that just means that your Show/Hide settings aren't consistent. What's the Numbering set to in the book?

In which file? I have tried to right click on the book to see the numbering and it is not available.

I have compared the numbering scheme to a project in another book where the TOC works just fine.

I am  tempted to just take that file and put it in this book and update. This should not be so difficult.

Let's see the book - the TOC will only reflect the numbering properties of the files in the book.

It is a bit mich to put up here I'd think.

Here is what came up in the error log. What do these statements mean?
