Clearing Cache Breaks Image References

I have noticed something unusual happening after I clear my local cache on my PDM system.

All of our FM files are saved on our SolidWorks PDM system, and we are encouraged by our IT department to clear out our caches regularly.
After a recent cache cleanout, I opened up all the FM files associated with a book that contains nearly one hundred images, all of which are also saved in the same PDM system. Once opened, every image appeared as a gray box. However, the file path shown on each image’s object properties was still intact and valid. Curiously, when I opened up the image from file explorer and clicked back into FrameMaker, the image would change from the gray box to its proper appearance.
While we were discussing this issue, my coworker also cleared out his cache. The same issue happened with him.

Is there a quicker way to resolve this issue than opening up each image individually?

    Hi,

I would guess that FrameMaker stores the images in its cache, so that you can flip through a document faster. When you delete the cache, it must check each image, and then at first it shows grey boxes. Later the correct image is shown.

    Best regards, Winfried

Winfried: Later the correct image is shown.

Will this update happen automatically with time, or will each image still have to be opened?

    Hi,

I would guess that the image will appear automatically.

What happens, when you just click CTRL+L to refresh the display?

When the paths are correct, FrameMaker should be able to display them.

Or what happens, when you select one of the grey images and open the Object Properties pod. At the bottom there is the path to the image. You said that the path is correct. Then you could just click Apply. What does happen? Or when you click Browse, so that the file dialog is shown and click Open? (If you had scaled your images, they would be scaled to 100 %!)

    Best regards, Winfried

    What happens if you cycle:
    View 🞃 Options…
    ☐ Graphics [Set]
    View 🞃 Options…
    ☑ Graphics [Set]

Thanks for getting to me on this issue! Unfortunately, this did not fix the issue.

Originally, the graphics toggle was on. Toggling it off made all the images turn white. When I switched the graphics toggle back on, the gray boxes returned.

You might have to turn off, close document, re-open & turn on.

Entirely exiting FM would be anothert experiment.

Separately, just how are you clearing cache? Is this in a browser, or via some system utility?

I wouldn’t expect browser cache to affect a native app like FM.
