Question

Conditional text and auto-numbering

FM8 seems to display auto-numbers as plain text and does not consider the condition indicators. Is this a bug or a feature. Or do I even have a mis-configuration.

I just edited FM7 documents with FM8. FM7 used to display auto numbers with condition indicators.

I recently upgraded from Frame 7 to Frame 10, and was unpleasantly surprised (gobsmacked) at this characteristic.  We use the AutoNumber Format attributes extensively, not just for numbering of paragraphs ... in some instances, for the entire paragraph's contentsFor example, we have a paragraph format with AutoNumber Format of simply "Engineering Notes"; the NextPgfTag attribute of this format nicely selects item 1 of an ordered list as the next paragraph.

Having such AutoNumber Format text, or the numbered or bulleted text of a list, appear in black instead of the color of the rest of the flow is particularly annoying. An example is attached. Does anybody know of a fix for this??

No fix. Still busted in FM11.

Also, be aware that if you now insert new content into the middle of a conditional, that content does NOT take on the same condition. You have to manually (re)apply the surrounding condition tag.

    Robin,

Electropubs has a plugin called Clean Import which imports formats from another document and removes unused formats at the same time. One of the formats it can handle is conditional text, so it might be just the thing for you.

    Hello,

I have a few questions about conditional text.

I inhereited some books that have a *ton* of unused conditional text. So far, I have found no way to remove unused conditional text across book documents- the conditionals must be removed one at a time which is a terribly time intensive procedure. Help says these should update during File>Import> Formats but that seems to only ADD conditionals, not remove them. Is there a better way to do this?

Second, when I update my books, I get a "Show/Hide (conditional) settings are inconsistent" message for a conditional that isn't even being used in any of the chapters. Any ideas as to why this might occur and what I can do to resolve it?

    Thanks for any advice!

It looks as if FM8 does not show the condition colours for auto-numbers, like it used to in previous versions. However, as the numbers belong to the paragraph they still get shown or hidden depending on the shown/hidden status of the end-of-paragraph mark. Just a display quirk I guess.
