Problem: I have FrameMaker 2020 version 16.0.4.1062. I have a book that contains 404 pages and many chapters. The first page of every chapter starts at 1 and I can’t get it to continue numbering. I have set the variables "page # of 404 " on each master page. I have followed all the suggestions currently in the forum with no avail. I have performed the following” Right-clicked individually on a few chapters in the book and then clicked Numbering. On the Chapter tab, I clicked the Continue Numbering from Previous Chapter in Book radio button. I did this to a number of chapters in sequence then updated the book. The chapters did not renumber as expected and continue to individually start at 1. On a few individual chapters on the master pages, I highlighted the Current page number variable and then clicked Format àDocumentàNumbering, the Continue numbering from the previous chapter radio button is set. First I'd like to clarify that you're trying to update the chapter numbers across the book and not the page numbers . Is that correct?

There are two valid ways to auto-number chapter numbers in FrameMaker: either use <$chapnum> or <n+> in the paragraph style. Newer files tend to use the chapnum building block and legacy files may still be using the n+ and that will be key to solving this.

Could you please click on a chapter number in one of the files, and share a screen shot of Paragraph Designer > Numbering so we can see how you have set up?

Hi Barb. I was trying to update the pages in the book. I went through all the suggestions made here and I redid all my chapter's numbering and page numbering and this time I updated quite frequently - seemed to have fixed the problem. I wonder if the problem was caused by not updating this large document frequently enough during modifications.

You mention the chapter tab in book numbering--are you using the chapter number ( <$chapnum> ) on your master pages?

Your page number would need to have the chapnum code in it: "page 1-# of 404 ". I highlighted where the chapnum would be. The Page number tab would restart at 1.

Thank you David for your reply and suggestion. My problem was with the page numbering. All ideas here pointed me to redo the chapter numbering and page numbering and while doing that, I updated the book frequently. As mentioned to Barb below, I wonder if the issue was caused by not updating the book frequently enough?

The Numbering Properties can be set in both the individual .fm files and in that file's entry in the .book. They can conflict, and I don't recall how that gets prioritized.

My practice has always been to set things up in the .fm files, and then set every /tab\ of every .book component to:

[Set]

If you want that FrameMaker does things for you, then do not select Read from file 😁.

Always Continue.

For the very first file restart. (I do not have FrameMaker on my mobile and do not recall the option names.)

Chapter refers to the chapnum variable.
The settings in the book take precedence. You have to update the book, so that the changes get applied.

Can you append screenshots of your book numbering dialogue?

Well, in my work, the .fm files are set to Continue (for page numbering).
For a singular book, I'm not aware of any advantage to either:
🔧 tediously setting .fms & .book to match, or
🔨 having the .book override the the .fms
(but I'm always willing to learn🤯)

For multiple books drawing from a shared pool of .fm files, the .book settings might well be essential.
