creating an index

I'm trying to create and generate an index in a single document but want that index to have subcategories

such as:

page layout

   basic, in templates 21-6

   column layout, changing 18-7

          to 18-9

    column layout, in new documents

                                 2-11

     margins, changing     18-7

and so on.

I can see how to insert markers for specific terms or phrases, but how can I index areas

of interest and index them as in the sample above?  Thanks for any help.

    Carol,

    To indicate an area of interest, you'll need to use the $startrange and $endrange building blocks in the markers. These need to be paired with the exact same contents, e.g. "<$startrange>column:layout changing" at then beginning of the area/page of interest and then "<$endrange>column layout:changing" at the end of the area.

    Thank you. Arnis - what symbol are you using for the <?startrange><?endrange> ??

    There is no special character or symbol for the startrange and endrange, just type in the actual text with the angle brackets and $ sign, before and/or after the text of the entry itself.

    Colons separate levels of entry, so your marker text would be

    page layout : basic, in templates

    and

    page layout : column layout, changing

    Just make sure that you don't try multi-level index entries (animals:bears:polar) in documents that are in a book inside a master book of books - FM crashes with a spectacular error in FM9 p250. Learned that one the hard way & am still waiting for a fix from Adobe on it ;>)
