Creating Links between FrameMaker books

I am trying to setup a series of links from a Getting Started document to the User's Guide.

I can create the links easy enough in Framemaker by creating a cross reference. The links work find in Framemaker, but as soon as you create the PDF the link is broken. This actually makes sense to me because it doesn't know where to find the other PDF. Is there a way to create these links in Framemaker so they don't get broken in PDF.

I am using FrameMaker 9.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Mack

When creating PDFs with links between FM books, both book files must be open in FM when you create the PDF in order for FM to properly resolve the destinations. Cross-refs will work fine.

Note: as Error7103 mentions, if the user moves any one file, the relative links will probably get broken.

This actually makes sense to me because it doesn't know where to find the other PDF.

I might add that even when it works, it's pretty easy to break it, by renaming files or moving or copying the PDFs to a different directory relationship.

Which you won't do, but the end user might.

The links work fine in Framemaker, but as soon as you create the PDF the link is broken.

I've never tried it, but I'm guessing that you have to generate named destinations.

For example, at the book menu, it would be:
    File > Print Book >

  • Generate Acrobat Data > PDF Setup

    [Links]

  • Create Named Destinations for All Paragraphs

    _______
