Cross references in conrefs - FrameMaker does not update

Hi all,

the scenario: file A has cross refs to file B ("see chapter xxx on page yyy") and vice versa.

When I insert both files into file C via conrefs, then the cross refs do not update to show the propers chapter/page numbers when I update file C.

How can I get this to work? These are structured FM documents using the DITA 1.1 structure.

Hi Robert...

Are these XML files or structured FM binary files? If they are XML files, they should be updating. If they are FM binary files .. don't do that .. it really doesn't work.

What alternative exists to work with modular structured FM files? Can I use normal insets? I though that structured FM documents with conrefs work just like insets from FM perspective but maybe there is a better way to do this.

Hi Robert...

In many ways, structured FM and XML documents will work the same, but not always. If you're using DITA, I don't think there's any benefit to staying in structured FM. Have you considered just using XML?

If you want to stay in SFM, yes, you can use regular text insets .. or you might take a look at a plugin from West Street Consulting called InsetPlus. It lets you work with conref-like structures, but it's designed for SFM.
