Distiller uses a very limited approach to look for installed fonts

Adobe Acrobat 8 3D, Distiller Professional 8.1.0

Distiller does not take note of the following locations:

  • Any subdirectory of the listed font locations in Distiller.
  • Fonts which are defined in the registry at HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Type 1 Installer\Type 1 Fonts
  • Font which are defined via shortcut in the Windows Font folder

FrameMaker 8 (and even before) finds all mentioned in the latter 2 points besides those in the Windows font directory.

These drawbacks  make it quite difficult to organise fonts in a reasonable manner, especially with tools such as Font Expert.

I have more than 150 font families on my system of which I install/activate only those used for current projects.

IMHO there should be a homgenious strategy to find fonts for all product of Adobe.

How do You organise your fonts?

    Hi Klaus,

On XP class machines, I still use ATMDeluxe to activate and de-activate "sets" of fonts based upon project requirements. I have a common \Fonts folder (with numerous sub-foldlers) that I keep all fonts in.

I haven't tried it yet, but Extensis has a new Windows version of their Suitcase Fusion 2 font manager. One of Adobe's font experts (Thomas Phinney) left to become the product manager for font solutions at Extensis, so I would give this product serious consideration.
