Question

Does Adobe [officially] support Framemaker 11?

All,

1) With FM 2015 available, does (will) Adobe still support FM11?

If yes, is there a known end-of-life date?

2) Are FM11 licenses available through Adobe?

If not, is it possible to purchase FM2015 licenses, and have them modified to work with FM11?

Some software companies have done this in the past.

Thank you for the assistance!

Until you get a more official answer, my recollection for responses to this sort of question in the past are:

    • Adobe apparently supports FM as the current release and one release back. If so, FM11 is apt to be considered unsupported shortly. Support for release-1 may be limited to critical defects in any case.
    • Availability of back releases is an entirely separate matter. Through Adobe's Volume Licensing, you may be able to get licenses and install media/images for arbitrary older FMs, whether supported or not.
    • In the specific case of FM11, I see that CDW (dot com) still has FM11 licenses and media for sale.

Getting older FMs to run gets very challenging the further back you go, due to older operating systems being themselves unsupported (if not too risky to run), Microsoft burning compatibility bridges at a furious rate, and newer CPUs entirely omitting older machine modes and instruction sets. This isn't apt to be an issue for FM11 on Win7 or 8, but I would assume nothing about Win10.

Considering the ferocious rate of MSFT self-destruction, ADBE needs to consider migrating FM to a platform that has a future.

Appreciated the input – it was helpful and closely matches what I ultimately learned.

Finally reached a person at Adobe that I felt was confident in their answer to my query.

    Per Adobe:

    1) Adobe supports FM 2015 and current -2 (FM 2012 and FM 11).

    2) FM versions older than FM 11: Support is on a limited bases – Only Installation, Activation, and “similar” issues.

    3) Licenses: For FM versions current -2, purchase a FM 2015 Enterprise License a.k.a. Volume Licensing Program. These licenses are backwards compatible. Retail licenses are backwards compatible. Note: Versions current -3 and beyond were not researched.

    4) FM on O/S older than Win7 (fully patched) is not supported.

    Thanks again!
