Downgrade documents from FM2022 to FM2019?

I have several huge documents who have been upgraded from FM 2019 to FM 2022, and then edited.

Can I somehow go back to FM 2019 without loosing any information?

Yes, you can save as MIF (Maker Interchange Format), which can then be opened in any earlier version of FrameMaker.  Any 2022 features that you used will be discarded when you open it in 2019; in practice that shouldn’t be an issue.

If you have a large number of files to downgrade, please see my ConvertDocs script on www frameexpert dot com. Thank you.

I forget what “Save As” levels are present, but the answer is “yes” - you can back save FM docs as earlier versions - the caveat is that any feature of the newer version won’t translate into the older one.

If these were originally FM2019 documents, that were just incidentally opened (and auto-upgraded) to FM2022, there should be zero problem using the MIF route to send them back.

I routinely re-save .fm & .book to MIF when wrapping up a project, because it’s hard to guess how it might next need to be opened.

On the other hand, if you need to save to “MIF 7.0 (*.mif)”, odds are high there will be major character encoding problems.

I have just performed a quick “down-grade” test. I saved as “mif 2022” in FM 2022, which seemed to be at better choice than the other option “mif 7.0”.

FM 2019 had no problem opening the mif 2022 files. And, at a first glance, everything seems to work fine in FM 2019.
